The concept of home country really wasn't around before the Civil War. People considered themselves citizens of their individual states first. If you needed a passport you got it from your state, not the Feds.

I had rellies at D-Day with the British military.

Twoof the big reasons the Americans make greater claim to it are the horrors of Omaha Beach and the fact that the British allowed fewer war correspondents, and none in the first wave...we have no photos of the British troops on the beach.
