One of those Medicaid covered adults, age 19-64, who do not receive benefits from SSI or SSDI and is also not covered by Medicare is my adult daughter. MS hit her hard at age 28; the Cleveland Clinic brought her back. Twelve years later, they keep her functioning via twice-yearly infusions that cost I literally do not know how many thousands of dollars apiece (mid- to upper four figures? More?) We are both terrified of her losing the coverage that allows her to work (regular part-time) and maintain a relatively normal life. And I'm furious that the so-called 'representatives' forced on us by Ohio's thoroughly rotten statehouse give not one single fuck if that happens to us or not.
PS a forty-plus year old woman with MS is not the ideal candidate for indentured agricultural servitude. Still, I guess it beats scrubbing out nuclear reactors with a toothbrush, eh?
Schrödinger’s Medicaid claimant : a lazy slob living in his mother’s basement playing video games 24/7 who is just gagging to go and work 6 days a week picking fruit and veg in the boiling sun.
My disabled sister turns 56 in two days, and she's Medicare QMB anyway, but there are a lot of disabled people in her group home that are about to get their benefits cut. Thinking about one of them, we'll call her Ruby, who is 45 years old and is a few notches below Forrest Gump functionality. She cannot remember people for more than a few days and politely introduces herself to me each time I go to visit my sister.
Not enough Medicaid recipients but plenty of prisoners and detainees. And more every day! That’s where the cheap conscripted labor will be coming from.
Not going to turn out as profitable for them as they think. You can't get blood from a stone. And if they choose to torture the people they force into it to death that shrinks the labor pool even further.
My mom married into a family owned farming business that are now the largest tomato growers in the country. When my step dad was alive he would take me to the fields, green houses, and packing house. They are low wage jobs and the faster you can pick, you can make more because they are paid by the bushel. They continually tried to hire Americans and documented immigrants but it never, in the 40 years he was alive, worked out well. Getting work visa was next to impossible and now it is even harder. Not even for crew leaders. It’s backbreaking work under the scorching sun with no shade except for lunch when they would sit in the shade from the truck. It’s not easy work and it takes skill to harvest fields without damaging the plants. I would go to the fields and have lunch with them. These workers would follow the harvest and stayed with the company for decades because unlike a lot of big Agriculture, the migrant camps were clean and livable. They didn’t cram a dozen people into a studio sized apartment. They provided schools and clinics. And still, not a single american lasted more than a day, if that. So I can attest to the fact that not a single American is willing to do these jobs. NONE!!
You hit the nail on the head with a no college thing. If I recall correctly, back in 2008 or so there were stories about small farms going understaffed because workers had returned home. They couldn’t find replacements and that was during a recession
I worked for a summer harvesting various crops (strawberries, rasperries, and blueberries. It was hot, tiring work. Even then most of the workers were Latino because most Americans don't want to work those jobs. They just don't. I found a job in a nursing home and that, hard as it was, was an improvement over ag work.
From personal experience I can tell you that unless you are used to standing on your feet all, being required to stand on your feet all day will destroy your back. If you are not used to stooping over to do work that stooping will destroy your back. American are not used to that kind of work.
ICE has been rounding people up for about six months. And yet I have not heard of any flocking to any job site. There are occasional new hires, but no flocking.
Why did you leave out the able bodied children, for Pete's sake?!? Because child labor is also back in vogue with the GOP.

Man, all I can say is that there are an awful lot of really big chickens looking for a place to roost. And when they find them, look the fuck out.
Fuck Ted Cruz.

The Nazis didn't care and I don't think this regime will either.

Can I suggest that not all people who are undocumented work in the fields.
Many work in nursing homes, so all you really have to do is hop the bed rail, and BOOM....replacement worker!
Careful with that hoppin'.
Look on the bright side. With the Dept of Ed cuts, there will also be plenty of teachers to pick that lettuce.
The math is mathing because those jackasses don't know math.

"Wow, those 45s really make a mess. Better call an ambulance."
SECOND DEPUTY: What's goin' on here?
CASY: This man a yours, he got tough an' I hit him. Then he started shootin'--hit a woman down the line--so I hit him again.
SECOND DEPUTY:Well--what'd you do in the first place?
CASY: I talked back.
