Yes, Robyn. Oppressing women, people of color, and anyone whose sexual orientation is other than straight, or whose religion is other than their version of Xtian, is all they truly care about. Oh, and one other thing: Taking money from the pockets of the middle class to make them poor, and shitting on the poor, so their favorite billionaires can buy another home/yacht/vacation/stock portfolio. These, and only these, are Republican values.

This ties into one of my personal bugaboos, which is the accusation often flung by the reich wing that those of us on the left have no morals. We got morals aplenty; they just aren't the same ones as them. And given what they DO revere, i'm proud to part of the TRUE moral majority in this country: those who care about equality, life after birth, fair wages, the air we breathe and the water we drink and - I could go on.

It's important to call out this hypocrisy. It's even more important to hold journalists to account when they repeat these lazy tropes.

There are no "family values" republicans. Don't credit them with these terms.

The same goes for "pro-life." We must say, "Forced birth."

They’re just following the biblical definition of marriage as described in the OT. All of those patriarchs had multiple wives or one wife and bunch of concubines on the side. Some, like Solomon, had both.

Family values for republicans mean you can bang all the side pieces you want so long as they’re at least of high school age (that’s mainly for Matt Gaetz and Roy Moore) and have a pulse.

The only things that are out of bounds are going Roman style with dudes and farm animals. Although they may be flexible on the farm animals.

Family values is simply code words for, "The man of the household gets to do whatever he wants." Wife? Has to obey and shut up. Kids? Have to be perfect little idealized clones. Husband and father? He gets to keep a side piece with a potential bonus of additional children (since no abortion allowed) OR pay to send the mistress to to an abortion permitted state. He gets to talk shit about his own children and/or disown them if they are gay. He gets to get drunk or drugged on a regular basis, and lie as much as he wants, while touting how tough he is on crime.

Congrats to Melody, for deciding she didn't want to obey and shut up. Hop on over to Georgia if you want to have a good old fashioned bitch session with a fellow southern gal.

I have one question for those flogging "Family values" WHOSE FAMILY?? My parents taught us to respect every person and to be kind, not to feign affection, to be open minded, to protest injustice and institutional as well as individual acts of racism and bigotry.

After the whole "cranking hawg at Beetlejuice" thing, I was explaining to my mother how basically any time Boebert leaves her district everyone hates her, because Colorado is a blue state but her district is all mega churches and Chair Force evangelicals. She said "Well maybe they won't like her so much after this". My mother is in her 80s and still thinks right wing evangelicals care about character. I had to remind her that something like 89% of them voted for Trump.

Reminds me of that dude that went walking? or riding? the Appalachian trail. Man, he was hilarious.

For Republicans, "family values" just means that men get to cheat on their wives, force women to give birth, and keep gays in the closet. No mystery there.

To me it's a question of character.

Ever wonder how men like Obama marry once and stay married? Or Joe Biden, whose first wife was cruelly taken from him, rebuilding his life with Jill and remaining faithful to her? Even Bill Clinton, dog that he was, managed to stay married to Hillary. It's because they are men of fundamentally good character, married to women of good character, with all that this implies of decency, fairness, scruples and respect.

Now look at the marital records of some of the most prominent Republicans. Trump, Gingrich, Reagan, Giuliani -- none of them could hold a first marriage together, and in several cases not a second or third. It's because the hypocrisy, willingness to lie, and arrogance that drove them as politicians poisoned their personal lives as surely as they have poisoned our public one.

So in the first time I can ever remember even mildly disagreeing with Robyn, whose posts I have loved for years, about anything, I don't agree that it's useless to point out the hypocrisy of those who prate about "family values" while treating their own families like garbage. At the very least, if we keep doing it, independents (i.e., those who don't pay much attention to politics) will potentially see the difference when they keep seeing those people exposed as hypocrites, over and over and over.

I’ve said this many times before: I think that the GOPpers who actually BELIEVE the shit they spew from their assmouths is a tiny fraction of the whole party. I absolutely believe the vast VAST majority of them say what they say, whether it’s bullshit about family and faith, or bullshit about trans kids and drag shows, 100% for political power and not one fucking iota for anything else. The BEST that can be said about them is that some of them MAY be stupid enough to drink their own koolade. But it ain’t fucking many.
