Sam Langford, one of the greatest boxers of all time . Langford was denied the chance to fight for a heavyweight championship because of race . He was a Black man from Nova Scotia …
Never thought I'd come across Eric Nesterenko's name again. He played with Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita, so being a racist thug was unnecessary and you might say "extra." I'm glad his victim survives him, to tell that tale and contribute more than Nesterenko ever did.
You know, when someone tells you they can't give you legal advice, they're not being mean (I guess, unless they're your lawyer). I've seen too many write ups in the Journal of Judicial Ethics of stuff that I'm sure started out with "trying to be nice" and ballooned out of there.
One of my (very sweet usually) neighbors got a little huffy britches when I kept saying, "you know I can't help you with this". I let her know about the court's online self help page, but she was very "but you know me--you can tell me--I won't say anything!"
It's fine--I'd rather annoy her for a bit than end up with an ethics complaint.
That reminds me, you had a link to a site that had all the MST3Ks. Would you mind reposting it, if you still have it? My son and I want to see some that are not easily available.
It wasn't the stream, it was a site. Where one could select which episode to watch. They even had KTMA episodes. We're looking for a certain big lizard.
I watched a youtube weather forecaster yesterday who claimed the El Nino that has dominated our weather is receding and by early summer should dissipate, thus this summer won't be as hot as the last. At least we got that going for us.
Birthdays: Nicolaus Copernicus, David Garrick, Constantin Brancusi, Cedric Hardwicke, Frank Tashlin, Lee Marvin, Smokey Robinson, Karen Silkwood, Jeff Daniels, Falco.
Obituaries: Gopal Krishna Gokhale, Ernst Mach, Billy Mitchell, Andre Gide, Deng Xiaoping, Grandpa Jones, Stanley Kramer, Umberto Eco, Harper Lee.
The last time I was a casual smoker of the cigarettes (1993), I worked with a Moroccan guy who when he saw me smoking used to exclaim in his delightful accent, “Hey, Smokey Robinson!”.
It does seem incredible that with all the actual hair on fire emergencies we have going on here on this planet, these chuds continue to throw themselves into the frontline fight over..... Cookies?.... Light beer?.... Kids books? Very serious people. 🤔🧐🤨🙄
A new poll of historians coming out on Presidents’ Day weekend ranks Mr. Biden as the 14th-best president in American history, just ahead of Woodrow Wilson, Ronald Reagan and Ulysses S. Grant. While that may not get Mr. Biden a spot on Mount Rushmore, it certainly puts him well ahead of Mr. Trump, who places dead last as the worst president ever.
Indeed, Mr. Biden may owe his place in the top third in part to Mr. Trump. Although he has claims to a historical legacy by managing the end of the Covid pandemic; rebuilding the nation’s roads, bridges and other infrastructure; and leading an international coalition against Russian aggression, Mr. Biden’s signature accomplishment, according to the historians, was evicting Mr. Trump from the Oval Office.
I wonder if academic political scientists make the same connection between Reagan inviting the evangelicals to the table and all the shit we are experiencing today. Also, the whole anti-environmental thing feeds into climate change denial. Only Reagan's dislike of the Soviet Union is mitigating.
First Reagan came along, and I thought we'd hit a 20th Century low to rival Harding and Hoover. Then the deserting coward came along to make Reagan look not nearly as bad. Then of course the PAB....
Interesting that the UK and the US, which followed English traditions, are the countries with the most screwed up voter base. It's as if that whole system is kinda fucked up.
1807: Aaron Burr is arrested for treason. In what is now Alabama, as US Pres. Jefferson weaponizes the justice system against his former Vice President. Spoiler: Jefferson lost, and Burr was acquitted.
1846: The Republic of Texas transfers all authority to the new state government.
1847: The first rescue team reaches the Donner Party. Burp.
1878: Thomas Edison patents the phonograph. “Mary had a little lamb / And it was always gruntin’ / She tied it to a five bar gate / And kicked its little **** in.”
1942: Japanese planes attack and bomb Darwin, Australia, killing 243.
1942 also: US Pres. Franklin Roosevelt signs Executive Order 9066, allowing the relocation and internment of Japanese-Americans. Shame.
1954: The Soviets transfer the Crimea back from Russia to Ukraine. It had been Ukrainian for centuries, so suck my balls Snooty Pooty.
1963: Betty Friedan’s book ‘The Feminine Mystique’ is published, reigniting the feminist movement in the United States.
1976: Executive Order 9066 is finally rescinded by US Pres. Ford.
1985: William Schroeder becomes the first person with an artificial heart to survive long enough to leave the hospital.
2002: The Mars Odyssey probe starts mapping Mars (duh).
My mother just asked me for a CD with pictures, and I’m far too tired to explain nobody has burners for those anymore. Even though what she wants is already on the cloud, I’ll still go ahead and make a USB stick because I feel like that’s a halfway point that she’ll understand.
We have a few external CD/DVD writers kicking around, but mostly to archive/copy mri/pet/etc scans ... I did occasionally do picture or music CDs for my parents, but no longer a need for that :(
I have one right here on my PC. It's not even all that old. It's external, because there are no drive bays that open to the exterior on this PC, but still.
Thanks! The USB drives I have around don't have a write-protect switch. And I'm OK with changing the file permissions, but those can always be changed back.
Just picked up two brand new pieces of furry art, including one for International Women's Day done by an artist who's going in for surgery on his drawing hand this week.
You left out the one besides Drake that I thought of Rocky Johnson aka father of Dwayne Johnson.

I went looking for that last year; it was taken down.

Dang. Thanks, not surprising.
There are some youtubers that keep putting up unlicensed episodes. One is rowsdower (of course).
Not Tor's best work.
But he was far more eloquent than Trump.
So are the meth-addled chinchillas of Disqus.

Until they come up with the next excuse.
Too bad Australia's west coast is suffering record-breaking heatwaves right now, with temps pushing 50°C.
That's....warm.

Smokey Robinson celebrates his birthday today with a new album release: GASMS

Ah, a KCRW link!
Mach died the day after his birthday. I blame the Doppler effect.
He didn't hear it coming.
An Oreo Super Bowl commercial has prompted a right-wing organization to lash out at the cookie brand for the “gender ideology indoctrination of kids.” I wish these dick dribblers would get a life. https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/right-wing-org-blasts-oreo-for-indoctrinating-kids-by-partnering-with-militant-lgbtq-group/ar-BB1itihl?ocid=msedgntp&pc=ACTS&cvid=edfb0b4381da4962b4d9bc4a6b2ea73e&ei=17

"The National Legal and Policy Center" my ass
Have they banned everything yet? Should be pretty soon ...
It must be a boring life, sitting on your collective thumb, waiting to be outraged by literally everything.
Can you imagine it, waiting for FakesNews or ONAN or some tatty little online sweat lodge to yank your leash and set you barking at something?
(upvote for 'online sweat lodge')
I thought the problem with Oreo cookies was white replacement.
I wish the opposite for them.

They should have ranked Trump 60th, to allow for another 50 years or so without having to reassess.
BETTER THAN REAGAN!!?!?!!?
is it april first or something?
I wonder if academic political scientists make the same connection between Reagan inviting the evangelicals to the table and all the shit we are experiencing today. Also, the whole anti-environmental thing feeds into climate change denial. Only Reagan's dislike of the Soviet Union is mitigating.
I do. When Reagan elevated the Moral Majority all HELL broke loose.
Thank you. I thought I hallucinated the 1980's. :-)
Reagan didn't call for an insurrection, so ...
They actually reported it on Fox News, haha
Yeah, but they didn't report that PAB came in dead last.
A good one to rile up the rabble.
Explains the pink mist in the air.
Trump's #1 as Worst President!
I hope we've hit bottom - thought I'd never see worse than GWB, but was badly mistaken.

Carful of the razor in the apple with the Daily Heil. There's still a stench of "both sides" here.
Plus the Heil is a nazi-loving, granny-zombifying hate-filled rag and reading it is like dipping your brain into dilute battery acid.
I just saw him from yesterday claiming if he wins Michigan he "wins it all."
Are you sure he wasn't just singing a half-recalled ABBA song?
He is focused on staying out of prison and pardoning himself and all his "friends"
Nothing more.
EGGGG-ZACTLY THIS!!!!!!
No offence to our UKian friends here, but given recent history of UK politicians...
Didn’t they have a PM who lasted less than a scaramucci?
And one who allegedly fucked a pig. Allegedly.
I actually believe the pig-fucker story. Can't trust toffs.
Bullingdon club japes, like.
Truss lasted 4 Scaramuccis.

Sadly too late for the Jedi.
No man can ban the plan Friedan began.
Fucking A.
What's with the animal cruelty jokes today? NOT cool.
It's just the one, and I blame my memory (what Edison purportedly recited in the first test of the device, and Monty Python's Big Red Book).
Wow, yeah. 1878 is fucked up.
Yeah, it's now 2024 when it's presented as a joke.

I have an internal front panel CD-DVD-RW in my computer but haven't used it since two motherboards ago.
Our local CVS Pharmacies still have CD burners in their photo editing/printing equipment. I think I have one around here *somewhere* ...
I'm a CD with pictures!
But yeah, probably the USB stick is a good idea.
I just wish there was a way to make them write once, read many. Too easy to lose and/or erase.
There are ways to do that IIUC!
Try this:
