I love that book. I agree that it would be romantically satisfying for them to take off and live happily ever after, but it wouldn't be much of a book if they did. It would just be a romance, with all the depth of a Harlequin trash novel. What I love about it is Hawthorne's insistence that, ultimately, living with honesty and integrity may be painful, but it is the only way. Dimmesdale and Chillingworth self-destruct because they refuse to do so, the first out of weakness and fear, and the second because he has decided secret revenge is the path to pursue. "Be true, be true, be true," Hawthorne writes. He was right then, and he's right now. The whole country could do with a sit-down to read the book right this minute.
