I had not anticipated taking a stand on being set on fire.

The Gas Can Protection Act of 2020?

That means it was signed and put into effect during PAB's first term. Explain that, Chipster.

I was one of the gullible souls who, until I was This Year Years Old, believed that the Fantastic Four animated show from the 70s replaced Johnny The Human Torch with a much safer robot named HERBIE because of real-life Little Johnny Storms crying "FLAME ON!" and immolating themselves. Turns out they had to write JTHT out of the series because Marvel, in its ill-fated 70s fire sale, had sold Johnny off for a possible solo series of some sort.

I actually agree with Roy on the whole gas can thing; gas cans have become ridiculous. Being a farmer I have decades of old, functional gas can spouts out in the barn. Whenever I've had to buy a new can, I immediately remove the new nozzle and throw it away, replacing it with a FUNCTIONAL spout from the days of yore. I have yet to set anybody on fire.

I think it's brave of Chip Roy, in today's Republican Party, to take a stand for childless adults who do not have a five-year old handy to open child-proof lids for them.

Hopefully Chip Roy can stumble into a running pre-wokism wood chipper and thereby actually match his moniker.

I always want to give Drew Barrymore the benefit of the doubt when she puts her foot in it. She was born to and raised by some very messed up people.

Her face and performance quite rightly mesmerized the world in 1984's Firestarter. Here she is at the Maine premiere. She was 9 years old. https://www.reddit.com/r/stephenking/comments/qt1u6x/9yearold_drew_barrymore_lights_stephen_kings.

When I was in grade eleven, one of my Social Studies teachers was a founder of a libertarian political party. He was of course happy to have captive audiences of sixteen year olds who had to sit and listen to him talking about his political philosophy.

And one of the things we asked was "well, wait, if the government is not going to do these useful things, who will do them?' His answers were so beautifully idealistic (though vague). "manufacturers will police themselves, out of self interest" and "private enterprise will step in to fill the gap" and "churches and charities will make sure people are cared for". Even at the time, this all sounded pretty fishy, even to us kids.

I don't know if people who found libertarian parties are so delightfully naive that they actually believe all this, or if they just don't give a damn as long as the wool is pulled over the eyes of the public. I kind of wish I could time travel 67 year old me back to that classroom to hold his feet to the fire.

Yeah, sometime regulations and red tape can be a bit stifling. But not dying in a fire is generally held to be a good thing, and manufacturers are not going to police themselves.

Libertarians don't actually know people, they just imagine how wonderful it would be to live in some kind of idealized world where everyone was intelligent, motivated, free of family trauma and compassionate.

The world we live in laughs at such naivete.

I knew a Libertarian type. His big bugaboo was handicapped parking spaces. He thought it was an unnecessary regulation. People would automatically leave the parking spaces closest to businesses open for the elderly and handicapped because people were basically good.

Jesus. Even if people are basically good (which I think a majority are), people are also thoughtless and occupied with their own concerns. So they may be happy to leave that spot empty if reminded, but if not reminded, they'll just go "Oh, what a good open spot!" and take it. Maybe if there could be, oh, I dunno, a sign reminding them?
