TW: Discussion of Republicans feeling unpopular
Last October, the Kent State chapter of campus "alt-right" group Turning Point USA decided to "totally own the libs" by wearing diapers in public and crying about "safe spaces." This, as you might imagine, resulted in them being widely mocked across the internet -- both because of the fact that they were in diapers, and because it is weird to protest people hanging out without you and abiding by mutually agreed upon rules that have absolutely nothing to do with you since you are not there. It's basically like protesting someone's Monopoly house rules when you were not even invited to play.
The event was dragged so hard that even Turning Point USA sought to distance itself from it:
In an open letter posted to the conservative website Liberty Hangout, Kent State's Turning Point USA President Kaitlin Bennett announced that she would be quitting the "shithole" organization in response to their lack of action when the whole internet was making fun of them.
Despite my hard efforts, I have been highly disappointed in the leadership of those higher up than me in Turning Point USA. I was embarrassed to have been left alone to deal with the aftermath of the safe space event, and even lied about by Turning Point national. You two approved the event but took zero responsibility to save face for yourselves. Not only did I invite you to attend our entire free speech week, but you even told me you would help me apply for a grant for the event. I was also made aware by other Turning Point chapters under your watch that you were fully aware that Young Americans for Liberty members were the ones who dressed up as children, and that instead of putting the blame where it belonged, you not only distanced yourself from the event, but you let my chapter face the consequences of online harassment. I am appalled that national headquarters lied about, and put one of their own chapters under the bus just so they wouldn’t upset another organization.
Wow! You know what it seems like she needs?
It really is quite interesting. This is a person who literally staged a protest against people who want to sometimes gather in groups in which they won't be harassed, because she believes they need more exposure to people who want to tell them they are going to hell or that they are lying about racism existing. Because FREEZE PEACH! But when she finds herself the target of online harassment, she believes she ought to be shielded from it.
Bennett maintains that the event was a super great idea and has no regrets for doing it, and she is really mad that the organization itself failed to take any responsibility for her actions:
Although I thought the safe space event was funny and have zero remorse for holding it, I took full responsibility for it when Turning Point failed to show any leadership. I had zero obligation to act in this manner, however my heart and soul were still dedicated to helping this organization grow as much as possible. With this, I swallowed my pride, apologized and moved forward in the direction that Turning Point wanted me to. Since then, I have worked tirelessly to make the event a thing of the past, and make Turning Point at Kent most remembered for the values we represent, rather than the event we held
How is that even fair? Why can't they take just a little personal responsibility for the thing she did, or at least said to the internet, "Hey internet, actually this protest was really awesome and great and you are all MEAN for making fun of their diapers and anger at people hanging out without them just because they are unpleasant and sometimes like to use racial slurs or tell people they are going to hell for being gay!" Is that too much to ask? Surely if they had, the internet would have responded by saying, "Oh well! If a respected organization like Turning Point USA stands by this ridiculous protest, then perhaps we should stop mocking it!"
She continues:
However through all of this, I am thankful for something. I have realized how much of a shithole organization Turning Point USA is, and am glad I got out of this bullshit before I invested my whole life into it, let alone just my senior year of college. Now that I have a clear conscience and have no desire to continue my employment with Turning Point, I will have the time to find a real job, something I recommend for you. Maybe answering to business professionals rather than college dropouts, egotistic enough to put their face on stupid memes, will give you the leadership skills you desperately need for your positions.
In case you are not aware, Turning Point USA is a particularly ridiculous conservative campus group founded by Breitbart writer Charlie Kirk, after he didn't get into the US Military Academy and decided that the reason he was rejected was because of "affirmative action." Even though his daddy worked for Donald Trump! He imagined that instead of accepting him, they accepted a woman of color, despite having literally no evidence of this actually happening. In fact, given that West Point is 80 percent male and 80 percent white, this probably just means that he was a lot less qualified than a lot of other white men.
Nevertheless, Kirk was SO MAD about this imaginary woman of color what stole his dream that he starting Turning Point USA clubs at schools across the United States. They are perhaps best known for their Professor Watchlist, in which they keep a record of college professors who are known to be liberal (which, as we all know, is against the law).
You may also know Kirk from this delightful meme he made of himself, which Bennett mentioned in her letter:
Given their equal propensity for amazing self-owns, you'd think that Bennett and Kirk would be a match made in heaven!
This is not the first time, by the way, that Bennett has felt unsupported and unloved. Not long ago, she complained to her school newspaper that even in the age of Trump, her views made her unpopular with fellow students. One time, even, when she was protesting federal funding for Planned Parenthood, another student drove by her and yelled, "I love abortion. I love Planned Parenthood," which she described as a "pretty nasty thing to say." Oh, the horror.
Clearly, the only way to make any of this right is for everyone on the planet to agree with Kaitlin Bennett, be her friend, tell her that everything she does is wonderful and great and never disagree with her on anything for fear of hurting her feelings. Because if we don't, then we're all snowflakes, or something.
