Speilberg wanted to address some of the themes from 1961 and refresh them for today, such as the racism and nativism expressed by the Jets. He also reworked some of the songs and moved them around. And Jerome Robbins' choreography was spiffed up a bit, so that the fight scenes look like fight scenes and not the dance fight scenes in the 1961 release.
