WHAT THE FUCK??? Are you telling me the American tax service doesn't provide software so people can prepare and lodge their own taxes for free on the internet? They have to go through for-profit providers WITH A BLINDINGLY OBVIOUS VESTED INTEREST in people not lodging their own taxes for free?? Because there's no fucking way that could go wrong.

I've been using TT mostly-happily for about a decade, since I realized that once I got all the records collected to take to the CPA, I could just as easily input them into the software myself (which is all the CPA does).

With the exception of rental property expenses, literally everything that goes into my fairly complex tax returns is duly reported to the IRS before I file it.
I'd have to file anyway because of the rental property, but with the new higher standard deduction and limits on state/local tax deductions, the vast majority of people with a mortgage and even stock investments could be fully automated.
