The guys you worked with must have been first cousins to the merchant mariners I worked with many years ago.

Me too. I thought I had read all of Twain's stuff, but I don't recall these. However, the not recalling things is happening more often these days. Thanks. I just did an online loan from my library.

I'd like to share with other parents my particular dread of the day young people discover two works of the demonic Mark Twain: Extracts from Adam's Diary, and, Eve's Diary. These profane works are set in Niagara Falls and I would like to see a proactive effort from parents of high schoolers beginning now! It's bad enough that Adam, not recognizing his own first born, believes Eve has captured him in some woodland and referring to the child as the Kangaroo, he tries to return him to the wood, finding him too noisy and is put out when Eve objects! I don't think this is funny and I'd like to get these works removed from shelves if possible.

I totally agree with you. And how did he learn all those things? By trial and error? One day I saw a picture of a field that was tiled, for drainage. They'd dug up the entire field-- about 6 times the height of a man in depth, so it could be planted. I got an idea of total drama in farming. And I thought, people who aren't farmers and who don't live near farms haven't got any idea at all what that's about. I wished then and I wish now there was a farming section in the big newspapers. Not pork prices, but what's new in pork raising bc of something something weather or new discoveries with some new fungus. But you know I bet big companies like Archer Daniels Midland don't want any coverage period. Just a lot of nuisance and meddling with their bad chemicals! When are those companies going to stop using the pesticides that have killed off all butterflies and 80 per cent of what the birds eat all winter? Pretty tough when the migrants arrive on their long long flights.

I thought it was fun when Rachel Maddow printed out a sex education packet from some school that was suddenly banned. She said, "it's available right here at Rachel Maddow.com."

When I was in University (Australia) in 1970, a rather beaten-up copy of Portnoy’s Complaint did the rounds after being banned.

It is a nice effect, but then: the books are banned from libraries and school hours.

Hoping that the free market of curious kids will make up for that systematic suppression needs to be seen. Especially given that the whole point of libraries is that a lot of people can't afford to buy new books all the time.

I wouldn’t be holding my breath for the “smart, thoughtful and kind” outcome. It takes more than a couple books about inclusion to overcome a lifetime of having parents who are so worthless that they feel the need to ban books about inclusion.

if i was an author who published in the real world, i would have it in my contract that if my book got banned somewhere that had to be added to the jacket
