I grew up on a farm. We washed the cow's udder with warm soapy water. rinsed after with a hose. Nobody ever got sick. But if you get careless washing, that's where all those cases come from. I would never buy raw milk because you don't know how clean they are.
Yeah, and cow shit contains e. coli bacteria in quantities you cannot imagine. It only takes a tiny amount of a deadly e. coli strain to cause severe illness or death. Most e. coli is harmless or causes mild illness. But some bacteria produce toxins, or even spores (botulism), that can cause severe illness or death. Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) and others, can cause Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which damages kidneys and can be fatal. Symptoms of HUS include decreased urination, pale skin, and extreme fatigue. Children under 5, elderly people and immuno-compromised are most at risk. In 1996, the year my daughter was born, there were several large outbreaks of contaminated fruit juice, linked to deer droppings. Another in Japan, was from bean sprouts. Thousands were sickened, hundreds developed HUS, and school children in both Japan and the US, died in these outbreaks. This prompted the requirement for pasteurization of juice and cider. Juice is now flash heated to 160-167 degrees F for 15 seconds, and packaged in sterilized containers. But they want to go back drinking contaminated juice because they think it's better for them? Just eat the fruit and wash it first!
People seem to be incredibly ill-informed (no pun intended) when it comes to food poisoning, and apparently a lot of things. They purposely feed their children unpasteurized milk and cider because heating them briefly to kill bacteria is "bad for them". But on the other hand, they think that if they just heat this bowl of over-the-hill casserole until it's lava, it should be fine to eat. Neither is true.
We know these bacteria could sicken or kill them. We know that some communicable diseases can also kill them. These are facts. What hasn't been proven? That vaccines cause autism, or that there is harm in pasteurizing food .
Robyn isn't wrong about cows and their shit. My father was a dairy farmer, and I often went with him for the second milking of the day. It's god-awful nasty - believe me!
