I think it would have lasted. The ruling class would cling to it like a limpet. it would be defended as the bedrock of the nation and to suggest change to that would devalue the blood shed to defend it. And One must note that slave labor made a comeback in Europe in Germany in both world wars so the concept wasn't completely dead either.

Also timing - the big European wars (and I'll include the Civil war here) started in the 19th century by which time the Mongol Hordes were a distant memory and the ottoman Empire was the sick man of Europe .
