I personally agree that hunting rifles and shotguns are sufficient for both hunting and home/self-defense. But high-powered assault weapons with high-capacity clips? Those are made for efficient mass murder and war. Why are we making weapons of war available to the often unstable and sometimes hysterical general population? I agree it's a bad political position to take, certainly with all the GOP-manufactured fear and panic about "taking our guns." What would happen to us if all our guns were recalled or outlawed? Nothing, in my opinion. I also don't believe a large scale insurrection would occur. Perhaps small pockets of people would resist, but, handled correctly, I do believe programs could be designed to recall guns, buy back guns, and gradually eliminate the sale and manufacture of anything other than hunting rifles or shotguns. People can still be shot and killed with hunting rifles/shotguns. But the fewer the guns, the fewer the gun-related accidents, suicides and murders. It probably won't happen, but the evidence of it working is apparent in Australia (I think?) where their gun violence rates plummeted after most guns were outlawed. Why can't we follow that example? Or, grandfather the law in. Stop manufacturing assault weapons for public sale, and outlaw the purchase of any new weapons. Anyone born on or after the date of the new law, could not own anything but a hunting rifle or shotgun. Eventually, future generations would be born into a society accustomed to not having gun access like we currently have. Those gun-loving 2nd Amendment folks of today can have their guns to cherish until they grow old and die. But the future would be much brighter for our kids and grandkids. A future with less violence.

I agree. And personally, I believe certain guns, such as rifles or shotguns for hunting, are not necessarily the problem. But most guns with clips and magazines are made for efficient mass murder of humans. Why we make those weapons available to the public is beyond me. I tend to agree with authors and philosophers throughout history who opine that we will bring the end of humanity upon ourselves. I think that's probably true. We are too busy fighting each other about rights granted hundreds of years ago to recognize how deadly to our society the availability of deadly weapons is. It's obvious, but there is too much money (NRA, manufacturers) and too many gun nuts who harbor extreme, irrational fears about "taking their guns." If they don't have a basement full of high-powered assault weapons, how will they defend their families from...from...who knows? Eliminate the guns, and the death toll plummets.
