Is there just one major political family in Nevada Republican politics, and Pete Domenici was like the Genghis Khan of it?

Clark Nova's avatar

Knew Domenici from the time he was running for City Manager (we didn't have Mayors then). Everyone I knew called him "Greasy Pete". I remember Agnew referring to him as "My old friend, Pete Dominsheeny".

Also known for being found wandering in the Capitol building in his pajamas and fuzzy slippers.

And my first thought was, “you need to be more specific.”

Republican sex scandals that apparently involve consent are so quaint.

I like the gymnastics in this statement

“it is clear that the political environment in New Mexico is favorable to Republicans. Over 70 percent of voters believe the country is on the wrong track. There is massive dissatisfaction with the economy, our border, and the misguided policies from Washington that have made life more difficult for New Mexico families.”

is it clear? what's the evidence?

sure, over 70% say that but in what context?

misguided policies? which ones? because the house republicans are too busy chasing dick and have no time for legislating and let the courts legislate for them.

Domenici is following the current maga campaign playbook. Forget the pleasantries, start out with the made up lies talking points. Bridgewater eh? She's loaded. I wonder how much of her own cash she's willing to burn on losing?

Yeah those kind of statements always get me. I don't think the country is on as wrong of a track as I did four years ago, in fact I *might* even be persuaded to say it's on the right one - well, no, headed towards it tho. Dissatisfied with the economy? When homelessness is a growth industry cause nobody can afford a damn place to live? Yeah, I'd agree with that; but I wouldn't lay blame for it at Biden's feet. The border? *shrug* Not living in a (southern) border state, I don't really have an opinion, but I think there's work to be done there and I wish republicans would quit getting in the way of it. Misguided policies? If there's an R attached to it, I probably feel that way about it, but not a blanket statement. So you've got someone who might plausibly agree with at least half her pronouncement, and yet I completely disagree with how she's likely looking to go about solving it.

Bagels of Doom's avatar

the border is an issue. that's a factually true statement.

Republicans have no interest in making it less of an issue or they lose a scare factor for their forever-campaigning.

OBVIOUSLY the U.S. is on the wrong track in that it's getting more fascist every hour. But if that question is intended as a comment on the current admin, then FUCK NO

Lefty Wright's avatar

According to Republican math if 30% of voters think the economy is bad, 20% think the border situation is bad, and 20% think Washington is too big for it's britches, that's 70%.

Bagels of Doom's avatar

"Speaking of DNA, Domenici is the father of recent Republican Senate candidate Adam Laxalt from an extramarital relationship with the late Michelle Laxalt, a Republican staffer and lobbyist, who was the daughter of Domenici’s fellow senator Republican Paul Laxalt from Nevada."

could someone please make a diagram of this mess? thanks!

I am getting really tired of this political speech style that says things like "There is massive dissatisfaction with ... the misguided policies from Washington". I suppose the rhetorical trick here is intended to slip in a criticism of the "policies from Washington" as being "misguided", but what it literally says is that there is dissatisfaction with the policies which happen to be misguided, but not the other policies.

"M"'s avatar

It needs to be challenged by the mainstream press

Unfortunately, too many of those outlets have majority right wing shareholders calling the shots even though in a country with a functional free press that is not at all how this stuff is supposed to work

New Mexico is an awesome state.

Clark Nova's avatar

With a sad political history. Albert Fall, of the Teapot Dome scandal, was from here.

TalentNotAutotune's avatar

That was then, this is now.

Enbastet's avatar

New Mexico is absorbing greatly expanded numbers of patients from forced birth states. There is both internal ethical opposition to these laws and frank practical opposition as facilities are swamped.

Lotsa luck to any Republican running on anti-choice ideas, which, well, every Republican now has to.

My memories of Senator Domenici do not seem to jibe with my concept of "horn dog".

I wonder if his other son, Pete Domenici Jr., attorney-at-law, is friendly with his half-bro? The famous Republican family values dedication would seem to dictate it.

BOTH of our Senators were among the 11 who voted for Bernie's bill to examine our arms giveaway for the Israeli genocide. Shame on the rest of the party.

So she's a CFO for a hedge fund. Part of the problem, in other words. Also, the fiercely independent, self-made corporation loves itself some state tax breaks -- from Bridgewater's Wikipedia entry:

***In 2016, Connecticut approved $22 million in grants and loans, via a program initiated by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, in exchange for job training, job creation, and building renovations, with the agreement that the firm retains the 1,402 jobs they already supported in Connecticut. The company also received $30 million in urban tax credits.[49][50] In 2016 the firm managed about US$150 billion.[49]***

Tax credits are inherently good, as long as the deal that created them is lived up to.

As a side note, it seems Steve Garvey of sportsball fame is going to run for US Senate in California.

"M"'s avatar

HE'S A CONFEDERATE REPUBLICAN

Please let us not be fooled

Someone from out there gave me the rundown on him last week

He's an old sportsball guy so that's why a bunch of folks would vote for him like he's some folk hero

Not because he would actually do anything like vote for a fair tax structure or to preserve women's rights to choose their healthcare

Paytheline's avatar

Ol’ Pete had nothing on Garvey, who had three ladies pregnant simultaneously.

Tommy Mo's avatar

Speaking of people who had extramarital affairs.

Dudley Didwrong's avatar

Californians do lovez them the celebrities and Garvey is one. Go back to George Murphy and Ronny Reagan, not to mention Arnold. But I find it ludicrous that people like Garvey think they can jump right into the US Senate. That tells me it's 90% ego, which I guess is what a celebrity is all about. Garvey wants to start on third base without coming up to bat.

Maryland Bear's avatar

I have no problem with celebrities entering politics per se -- they're citizens just like the rest of us and have the same right to seek office.

I would prefer, though, that they start small, like state legislature or US House, before trying for the Senate, governor, or President. I think you can argue that the Founders wanted the Senate to be filled with seasoned political veterans and the House to consist of citizen-legislators.

Governor and President are not jobs for amateurs. Although I will say that Arnold Schwarzenegger had become the face of the Republican Party rather the PAB, we'd have a much saner country now.

Daniel O'Riordan's avatar

How about a little smaller. Clint Eastwood became mayor. That's a pretty hefty amount of responsibility for someone with zero experience in the job. Still, the number of people he can fuck over during the learning curve is more limited.

"M"'s avatar

It's not just about whether he is a celebrity or even if he's a sportsball celebrity

Nobody is actually questioning him about his *policy positions*

Come on, y'all

Arnold is, IMHO, Our Greatest Republican. He's not perfect but he's very open-minded. And he hates PAB.

Larry Schmitt's avatar

Without knowing a thing about what he believes, it's a fairly safe bet he's a conservative Republican. Most pro athletes are comparatively wealthy, and seem to be conservative. Also anti-tax.

oscarphile's avatar

Is he actually a dictionary-definition conservative? Because that would be acceptable. Or is he a euphemistic theofascist "conservative"?

"M"'s avatar

You can say "Confederate"

Or "white supremacist"

It's fine

https://www.wonkette.com/p/daughter-of-that-republican-with/comment/47873896

I'd be real interested, actually, in someone doing all the hair-splitting about "small government conservatives" or whatever who could show us someone who wasn't a white supremacist

I literally haven't seen that happen going back beyond when the PARTY of the open white supremacists was the Dixiecrats and not the Confederate Republicans -- AMOF, I haven't really seen that in 400 years, certainly not the last three times Reconstruction was sabotaged -- but I continue to leave the challenge open for anyone who wants to present that candidate / officeholder

He is. And with his name recognition and three Dems knocking each other around he has a fair chance of making it through the primary.

Have to be able to look beyond yourself to get out of that mindset, I imagine.
