Imo, the only reason to engage in a high speed pursuit is if someone is being abducted. There are so many other ways to find a car or criminal and deescalate the matter. Arrest them an hour later at home.
Speaking as someone who plays a lot of light gun shooters in the arcade(House of the Dead, Virtua Cop, etc), I’m usually cast in the role of some kind of law enforcement. If a virtual civilian catches one of my bullets it causes me to lose life and a shorter playtime for my money overall.
It’s sad to think that the penalty I face in that scenario is probably more severe than anything the officers involved in that chase that cost real lives will face.
I would not assume the cops "probably could have solved ‘the case’ by some other, less deadly means, given all the surveillance infrastructure available to them."
Cops solve very few crimes at all, unless somebody tells them who did it, how, and why. And that assumes the informant(s) are telling the truth.
The job of the police is to give a name and a theory to prosecutors. A case is "solved" for their purposes when charges are filed, rightly or wrongly.
I was 14. One interesting fact is that the pediatrician didn’t tell my parents, let alone ask them for permission or informed consent. There’s an important unspoken rule in there. If you’re old enough to go to protests then you’re old enough to get medical treatment. It’s the same rule as if you’re old enough to ask for contraception then you shouldn’t need permission from your parents.
I am DAMNED grateful to live in a city that has the good sense and common decency to CALL OFF these aggressive pursuits if they pose a danger to public safety. Having had the opportunity to discuss such decisions with a few of the local LEOs it compelled me to recognize and respect those individual officers for genuinely respecting their affirmation to protect and serve. It didn't used to be that way in Spokane but the times they are a'changing and too damned many suspects, innocent citizens in the wrong place at the wrong time, and dedicated police officers doing their job have been injured or killed in this area secondary to well intentioned efforts allowed to go entirely too damned deadly far.
60 Minutes did a thing called “High Speed Pursuit” back in the 70s, and it was so low priority Morley Safer did it, and it found that police wrecked more Crown Victorias and drove up the municipal insurabce rates higher than the value of thr stolen cars.
“For what it’s worth, 80 percent of drivers have comprehensive vehicle insurance, which means that if their car is stolen, they will be reimbursed.”
Speaking as one of those 80%, I was at the new car dealer back in December. The car I wanted was on the lot for the right price, and in the final discussions they brought up how this “DOTS” or something anti-theft system was already in the car and it cost a few hundred bucks.
I said, “I don’t care about that anti-theft nonsense. This is just a new variant on window etching and it’s not going to deter any thief. I’m not going to pay for it and you won’t lose the sale over this crap.”
“But it will help the police recover the car if it’s stolen.”
“If the car is stolen I do not want it back.”
I actually had to explain to the sales people why: for staters, who knows what hidden damage the thief will cause. Second, comprehensive insurance will cover the loss. It’s just a car. I’ll get another one.
And yes, I bought the car and didn’t pay for that anti-theft nonsense.
But GI Joe and the Kung Fu Grip in the Adventure of King Tut’s Tomb. Tell me Steven Spielberg didnt play with that when he was 27 and writing another movie script for Indiana Jones!
In Kerala, India, the elderly are in danger of being alone all the time, because the younger people in the family have moved out for work or education.
The government is stepping in, by creating a caregiver training program, building a professional care workforce, as well as creating day care centers and fitness facilities.
Last week I rewatched the antique Ray Harryhausen masterpiece *Jason And The Argonauts* (That's the one with 'The Children of The Hydra', certainly still THE BEST sequence of all!)
But last night I dreamed instead of colossal bronze and stone statues suddenly breaking free from their pedestals and going to town in DC.
Abe Lincoln towered over the mayhem as he curb stomped the White House.
The six Marines from the Marine Corps War Memorial smashed into one side of the Pentagon and hauled drunken Pete Hegseth from his office and threw him into the Potomac.
Meanwhile US Grant, atop his warhorse and impervious to all gunfire, leapt to the Pentagon roof and commanded the Joint Chiefs to assemble immediate courts martial for themselves and anyone who obeyed illegal orders.
Over at the Capitol the Statue of Freedom stamped her foot through the top of the dome and crashed through down into the Rotunda where GOP leadership was holding a press conference.
None survived.
The Albert Einstein bronze memorial statue sauntered over to the offices of The Center For American Progress and offered to help with energy policy.
The Thomas Jefferson colossus was seen smoking a gigantic doobie in Dupont Circle and daring the Park Police to do any damn thing to stop him.
What a wonderful dream! But I woke up as ominous things were beginning to stir in and around the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Lacking representational and realistic sculptural elements, things were getting really.....abstract... over there.. Because those abstract things looked a lot like the Children of the Hydra crossed with Gunnery Sargent Hartmann. I was glad to wake up before they completely rose from the ground.
While I like your dream, I have to point out that Jason and the Argonauts came out in 1963 when I was 3 years old. An item has to be 100 years old to be considered an antique so while the movie is great it is just old and you will have to wait until 2063 for it to be an antique.
I saw Jason and the Argonauts at the Drive -in with my parents and three brothers. We were in an Oldsmobile station wagon the size of Rhode Island. There were two bench seats in the very back that sat facing each other, perpendicular to the other seats. (It's a true fact that no one ever survived an accident when sitting in those seats) It was the best movie I ever saw! I watch it every couple of years.
We had a Chevy Town and Country. No one ever survived in the back of the station wagon because the station wagon was a tank that ran over and crushed little Gremlins and Scamps and Corvairs (my dad had one of those too; great car) and Chevelles and Javelins. The kids in the back never even felt my mother running over everything in her way. (Dad taught mom to drive in a cornfield, and turned her loose after an hour. She had to learn on the job. So did the other station wagon driving moms with groceries in the back and beach toys in the seats and GI Joe and Barbie on the floor. Seat Belts? Who wore seat belts? You couldnt reach the ash trays in the door handles if you wore seat belts. (Yes, in 1963 everyone smoked, even three year olds. I was doing half a pack a day back then.)
Ta, Robyn. Are these cops 12-year-old boys who feel they've gotten over because they played Grand Theft Auto on older brother's game console? Ot was it Call of Duty? It's disgusting how little human life is cherished in this country, especially if that life is that of a woman, POC, or elder. Of course, if it's not yet born, it's precious beyond all measure.
Back in the day, when I was 18 or so, My cousin (for real this time) had early 50s CHEVROLETS. Head for the swervy rural lanes and pretend we were RUM RUNNIN. With out any POWER ASSIST nowhere on nothing, it was a real HOOT!
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson called out the majority following a 7-2 Supreme Court ruling that sided with pesticide manufacturers and determined the EPA is the arbiter — not state courts — to decide on cancer warnings on labels.
FUUUUUUUCK! With Zedlin in charge this is another nail in our coffins.
“It’s them Duke Boys again! Why are we chasing them? We know where they live. Let’s just go to Uncle Jesse’s and wait for them there.”

Meza was an asylum seeker so no doubt Naziferatu and the rest of the regime were disappointed ICE didn’t get to torture him first.
But what about my ladder what was heisted by the local cartel? My mistake. You said LATTER. NEVER MIND!
I just want to say I don't think stupid people should have access to action figures.

The Jefferson Memorial needs a stautue of Martha Jefferson and Sally Hemmings. Just sayin.

Vintage?
Depends on the item. For collectibles, generally 25 years is vintage and 50 years is antique.
Was that US GRANT the same one from the TOMB (with a B)?
The Traitor Killing US Grant!

Kind of a Talos fan myself.

Please tell us that you have prophetic dreams.
May your dreams come true
The police get extra mad at people for running red lights because only the police get to run red lights.

I wanna go to Copperhead Road with you and your cousin!!
Firemen do it, too. Is that why cops don't like firemen? That and trying to save the lives of the people cops shoot?
They value embryos more than they value any woman, or person of color.
They're gonna call me 'Sir'
They'll all stop pickin' on me
Well, I'm a high school grad
I'm over 5'3"
I'll get a badge and a gun and I'll join the PD
They'll see......
Seems to be the governing mentality for most cops.
OK, WHY IN THE FUCK! did Kagan and Sotomayor vote the way they did in the Monsanto thing?
What in the motherfuck is going on?!?!?!?!
Justice Kentaji Brown-Jackson is our last, best hope. Just like Leia in that hologram.

Bayer will cure that headache. Not the cancer tho.
Looks like I should go back to half a pack a day of Lucky Strikes. Fight Cancer with Cancer.
