The single most significant reason for homelessness is lack of health care. It is difficult, and in some cases impossible to be productive when you are sick or injured, so you become homeless "criminals" and toss us into their friend's for-profit jail. Win-win for the fascists.
I hope that DC shuts itself down with protests. That the residents camp in the streets and keep ANYTHING from happening, for weeks and weeks and weeks. If I lived there I hope that would be me. If it became a thing, I might consider a field trip.

I was at a restaurant with Fox News playing. One FOX NEWS ALERT!! showed people along Connecticut Avenue yelling "Go Home Fascists" at the federal cops. Fox said that (paraphrasing) liberal millionaires are bankrolling protests. Bankrolling what? Some poster board and paint? Then there was a clip from 1992 of Joe Biden saying that car jackings in DC are a problem. Let's see, (takes out abacus) - that would be 33 years ago. But yeah, let's send in the troops and maybe then can time travel back.
Here's an experiment I haven't tried yet but it might be worth doing: read the Declaration of Independence with F34 in mind instead of George 3. See how much it fits.
Do it again every month and track how much the fit increases.
I am a homeowner, and I live in Eugene, Oregon, where we have a significant homeless/substandard living situation problem for our size as a city. If they build more housing, my house, which has more than doubled in value in 13 years, will lose value.
And I say: BUILD THE FUCKING HOUSING. I will lose the obscene profit I might have made on my house, maybe, someday, but my fellow citizens, my neighbors, students, baristas, will have a decent place to live AND I won't have to go full-Chad and grubel over people sleeping on benches.
All it takes for a decent society is billionaires paying a lot more in taxes, and everybody agreeing on a certain basic level of comfort in life that we can most certainly afford.
I think about that when I consider selling my house. We live in an affluent community, with a perennial housing shortage for “normal” people (i.e. not comfortable retirees like us). We bought the house for a reasonable price, and I’ve put a lot of money and sweat equity into it. If I went to sell it today I could absolutely price it way out of reach of anyone starting out in life. So…I plan that if/when we sell, I’ll consider pricing it much lower, so we get our money back out of it, but not a profit. And screening offers to enable a deserving family to buy. Not sure of the legality of that, but I’ll look into it.
Better to get more housing built in the community than to have the commissar seize your house and subdivide it into apartments. You might get first pick on which one you get to live in.
He also seemed to say that all that understructure they put down for major road projects is silly and unnecessary, and all you have to do is slap 4 inches of asphalt down on the ground and hey! you got yourself an interstate.
