It was brought to my attention that some might like to know which weasel Dems abstained. That would be Sens. Elissa Slotkin (MI) and Peter Francis Welch (VT).

I haven't checked yet my fellow Michigan non commenters, but Slotkin has been pissing me off and has it looks like she's getting another pissed off letter from one of her voters.

She is competing for voters in one of the swingiest swing states. I disagree with what seems like a craven abstention here, but if you don't know the profound internal perversities roiling Michigan, you might want to hesitate passing such judgment.

tempusfugit's avatar

I most certainly do know what goes on in Michigan, thank you.

She is not 'competing'. She is WHORING to voters who will NEVER vote for her. A typical Democratic pathology and one which has brought us to the brink of the Fourth Reich of Gilead.

She's not just craven; she is venal, greedy, and completely untrustworthy.

Slotkin is throwing 'Identity Politics" under the bus tonight as the official Democratic response..

Expand full comment
Megan Macomber's avatar

It's worth remembering that Chris Murphy, now the standard-bearer for the Dem Senate resistance, first responded to Trump's re-election in essentially the same way: by asserting that Dems had gone too far with identity politics. Because he is my senator and I generally like his stances, I found this extremely disappointing. I'm glad he has moved on from it. Also worth remembering: Connecticut is a much safer space for such evolution than Michigan. Give Slotkin time.

As if the fucking Republicans are just reacting to 'identity politics.' There are solid Democrats who have objections to certain aspects of that! {tugs collar} Wherever they are. Anyhoo... Yeah. It's *way* beyond that, Ms. Slotkin.

She didn’t promise anything in her campaign aside from working across the aisle to “get things done”.

As someone has rightly pointed out, it was a smart campaign strategy to win in a state that Trump carried. But it’s becoming more and more clear that it wasn’t just a campaign strategy and she really does believe she’s the one who can successfully get the Republicans to see reason.

Sgt JMK's avatar

Amazing how differently the two parties see "working across the aisle."

Every Dem I've ever heard tout it as a strength means that they say polite things about the Republican party and its members and periodically capitulate to GOPer demands to vote for something or someone awful.

Every GOPer I've ever seen claim to "work across the aisle" (like my current Congresstwit LaLota) has meant "I occasionally talk to members of the Dimmo-rat party without spitting at them and once co-sponsored a bill to name a post office with one."

But that's the point. "The D's were blaming support for trans people..." - which Ds were that? Seth Moulton and a couple of other weasels? I don't think, for example, AOC was saying that.

People like to glom onto whatever Dem says something awful as representative of all Dems, because everyone, Left Right or Center, wants to believe "Dems" (collectively) are awful.

Some Democrats are going wimpy on this issue because they're obeying a simple political syllogism:

1) Republicans constantly attacked and lied about trans people.

2) Republicans won the last election.

3) Therefore, attacking and lying about trans people, or at least going along with those attacks and lies, is a winning strategy.

When you basically have no principles and no guts, cynical "logic" is enough.
