Voter suppression and gerrymandering and other gop fuckery is a problem, no doubt. But it seems the bigger problem is how to deliver a better message of genuine hope and a reason to believe a competent democrat can improve people’s lives. It didn’t work, somehow, last year despite a very capable and energetic campaign by Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. It was horribly deflating feeling to realize how shitty so many people in this country are. Harris is a woman of color, yes, and that alone scares a certain type of person, but she was an experienced attorney, VP and leader who was very capable of appointing an excellent cabinet and doing the job. Tim Walz is a white man with that smart but folksy genuine quality. He came with no real baggage or scandals or anything to frighten voters with.
We can relitigate 2024 and debate Biden’s role in the hurried campaign Harris was dealt. Despite some democrats anger that Harris was anointed our blue candidate without a primary, I’m not convinced there was another candidate more qualified or a better choice. I do feel Biden should have decided in 2023 that he would retire after his term, having achieved his goals of rescuing America from Trump and an attempted coup, implementing his signature infrastructure bill and navigating uncharted pandemic waters with a highly capable administration. It may have helped ease the pressure and attacks on him and his family into 2024, which feel like they were effective. The GOP managed to vilify Joe Biden, a likeable, even-keeled and fairly moderate politician despite no real specific issues. Just James Comer and some Russian bribery propaganda, “open borders,” a terrible economy (it rebounded better than expected post-COVID, and unemployment was at historic lows.). Hunter’s problems didn’t help at all, however overblown they were. But Joe announcing that he was stepping away in 2025 might have deflated the gop attacks.
In any event, attacking Trump for being a horrendous person, and now an elderly man sleeping through cabinet meetings and building a massive golden ballroom to dwarf the White House, didn’t work. Voters knew what he was and they wanted this. And millions stayed home and didn’t vote. The question is why. Didn’t they appreciate the gravity of the moment? Was the enthusiasm and positive energy created by Harris/Walz not enough to motivate them? It’s all so disheartening. I only hope we find the right person to inspire voters and return stability and respect and competence to our highest offices.
"They do sometimes seize on the few rare cases of illegal voting, though, to cry, “Looks like that thing libs say never happened is happening AGAIN,” and then they win all arguments forever" - except for the fact that many of the actual cases of premeditated voter fraud are from the GQP side who are just trying to "even things up".
But it's even more complete crap given that the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (and what a horrible name that is) was passed TWENTY-NINE YEARS AGO TO MAKE IT A FELONY FOR NONCITIZENS TO VOTE.
Like everything else they do - it's not so much a break from ethnic cleansing as it is their attempts not only to do it another way AND strip people of their voting rights -- but also to make sure that actual citizens get caught up in the net as well and trust that they will do their level best to deport some of US.
This is what happens when a country is so lazy it lets literal depraved Nazi criminals get hold of its most sensitive data.
I blame the passives who refused to stop their White nationalist domestic terrorist relatives from being horrible as well as the 90 million people who didn't vote -- not leastwise because the Confederate population was 30% in 1860 and it's 30% now, so them we will always have with us.
That's probably not a good tactic, as unless you live in a rural town in a blood red state chances are the person telling you that you aren't on the rolls when you go to vote is just someone's granny who's doing her civic volunteering and not Ken Paxton or some other asshole.
"Just one problem: the database, a decades-old system called (optimistically) the “Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements” (SAVE), was designed only to check whether applicants are eligible for federal benefits like Medicaid or SNAP at the time they apply for benefits, not as a permanent record of citizenship status or eligibility for voting."
Minor details. Just because a system was designed to do a specific task doesn't mean that the Fulvous Fuckwad and his regime won't use it for completely different purposes that better fit the agenda. Let's start with his perversion of the Alien Enemy Act.
> "While the Alien Enemies Act was enacted to prevent foreign espionage, the Trump [sic] administration has invoked it as the legal basis for the deportation of hundreds of alleged gang members.
[...]
The act states that "whenever there shall be a declared war [...] or any invasion or predatory incursion shall be perpetrated, attempted, or threatened" against the US, all "subjects of the hostile nation or government" could be "apprehended, restrained, secured and removed, as alien enemies"." https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cy871w21d3vo
◾ The Corrupt Coral Coward unilaterally decided that we are "at war" with gangbangers and anyone else he claims to be bangers. The only problem is the Act specifically says "nation or government[.]"
◾ His work-around on this was to announce that TdA and the rest being rounded up are here under direct orders from Nicolás Maduro.
◾ The Deep Saffron Dipstick issues an Imperial Edict to round up the gangbangers, brown skinned violent criminals, and drug smugglers. [NB: the drug mentioned is fentanyl but almost 100% is smuggled into the US from Mexico and through official Ports of Entry.]
>> "On January 20, 2025, President Trump [sic] issued an executive order (E.O.) declaring a national emergency pursuant to the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to address the threat to U.S. national security posed by international cartels and certain transnational organizations. The E.O. states that such organizations are engaged in a destabilizing "campaign of violence and terror throughout the Western Hemisphere" https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/LSB11269

The Alien Enemy Act of 1798
The Alien Enemy Act of 1798 is a wartime measure that authorizes the President, during a declared war or in the event of an "invasion" or "predatory incursion" perpetrated or threatened by "any foreign nation or government," to issue regulations directing the conduct of or otherwise restraining citizens or nationals of the hostile nation or government." ibid)

Next is his tariffs, where he abused the IEEPA:
> "§1701. Unusual and extraordinary threat; declaration of national emergency; exercise of Presidential authorities
(a) Any authority granted to the President by section 1702 of this title may be exercised to deal with any unusual and extraordinary threat, which has its source in whole or substantial part outside the United States, to the national security, foreign policy, or economy of the United States, if the President declares a national emergency with respect to such threat." https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?path=/prelim@title50/chapter35&edition=prelim
The Safety Orange Suckass' rationale was our national security and economy were at risk due to the rest of the world ripping us off... including countries where the US has a positive trade balance or no trade at all. I'm sure y'all remember the extreme economic threat from islands whose only inhabitants are penguins.
Every day I find myself more and more convinced that the Pyrite Pustule truly believes the entire country is as stoopid and gullible as his cultists.
OT The changing climate is really changing our winters out here in the West. So far our November and December weather is really mild and dry compared to historic averages. In the Midwest and East it's quite different.
We haven’t had free and fair elections since the 70s at least and probably since FDR. We have been living in an oligarchy are whole lives and just didn’t know. People are just starting to see the actual workings of the one world government and waking up. We need to scrap the entire system and start over if we want an actual democracy. Many wealthy people don’t like democracy as it gets in the way of their greed. Hence the current system. Think about how many times we heard trump tell us we don’t even need to vote, it’s all taken care off. That should be a clue, but he’s not the first.
Yes, well, two (or more) can play that game. If it weren't for taxes collected in NY, MA, CA, and a few other very blue states, places like AL and MS could NOT survive. We support them, and I'm sorry to say, enable them.
If I were a Dem in Congress, I'd demand that there be a 'rider' to the plan that a) anyone can file an official protest that they have been incorrectly removed from the voter roll, b) there is NO COST associated with that, and c) while the matter is being investigated, the petitioner will STAY ON THE ROLLS until DHS can show that they really should be removed.
Anything to prevent people who don’t like ICE scooping up gardeners and nannies in front of of their sobbing children, OR who object to the “President” calling a whole group of people “garbage”, from voting.
We have numerous Somalis living in Portland. They must be dismayed and angry over Trump's remarks. I wonder if DHS is going to start targeting them...I hope not.
Lot's of brown people have the name "Jesus." They just pronounce it differently. Also, Jesus was not only brown-skilled, but wore sandal, thus a hippie. Cared about the poor, and hated hypocrites. DEPORT JESUS!
Does anybody have any numbers on Trump's deportation shenanigans? How many people has he deported? Has he actually deported more people this year than Biden did the year before? Or has he just made it all violent and chaotic?
That’s a hallmark of Trumpism. When you have power and wealth, you don’t need to do the hard work of effecting change. You simply fire anyone who challenges you, or offers inconvenient facts. A key example is the jobs report and other economic data departments. When they report that new jobs are down, and unemployment is rising, Trump fires them, and simply reports his own version of reality.
The CDC is offering conspiracy theories about vaccines on their website to sow fear and doubt, which will surely lead to thousands or more children not getting vital inoculations. Can info from the CDC be trusted? Trump and his capitalist goons want to destroy the government because most of it doesn’t serve them. Regulations, taxes, oversight, ethics, workers protections, the social safety net, etc. The 1% are in control due to a near total absence of campaign finance laws, which allow money to control everything. And the 1% are not interested in helping the masses, they are experts at gaslighting them, frightening them, and controlling them while they grow richer. History repeats itself. America isn’t the first society to experience an untenable wealth gap. It’s happened before, resulting in violent control of the poor and eventually revolution.
Our government must be competent, honest, and it must above all serve us, The People, and make the priority improving the lives of the many, not the few.
I haven't seen any real numbers in a few months. But back then, they were well below Obama's pace (achieved via Tom Homan, to whom Obama gave the highest Civil Service award for his achomlishments).
And I've seen nothing--not one thing--to suggest they've been catching up. Indeed, the way they're spreading the net wider and wider, all indications are they're falling farther and farther behind. They already caught all the easy ones.
So as they ramp up the violence, the hatred toward the public, the vulgar language and contempt; it becomes increasingly obvious that this has not much to do with immigrants at all, and nothing whatsoever to do with "the worst of the worst."
It's about establishing a private army with impunity and no responsibility, to terrorize the populace.
When everyone votes, Republicans lose. They know it and instead of changing their policies to attract more voters, they instead decide they should choose their voters. Can't eliminate but we can render them toothless if enough people consistently vote against them. The problem I see is that some people might think that once Trump is gone they'll reform.

Ta, Dok. Noncitizens do not vote. They work hard, keep their heads down, and often send money to support the family back home, wherever that is.
