Nancy Pelosi is making news again today after her weekly press conference, mostly because she said this about yesterday's nutbag performance from President Stable Genius:
[T]his time, another temper tantrum — again — I pray for the President Of The United States. I wish him and his family, his administration and staff would have an intervention for the good of the country.
She prays for him . And she's just kind of suggesting that maybe the president is unwell, in his brain. She's being very subtle!
When Glenn Thrush asked afterward what kind of "intervention" she might be talking about, she suggested that Article 25 would be just fine.
.@GlennThrush to Pelosi: "Can you explain the comment you made about staff making an intervention" on Trump? Pelosi… https://t.co/DrURE8wMP5

But many folks out there right now are saying "BUT WHAT ABOUT INPEACH! They are not going to do an intervention, because the intervention is called INPEACH!" (They are taking her words very literally , it would seem.) Every other damn day lately, there is news about how "NANCY SAID INPEACH IS BAD" or "NANCY SAID TRUMP'S ACTIONS IS SELF-INPEACH-ATORY, WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN, NANCY!" and whatever else, we don't know, because we have muted all of Twitter until further notice. ( Here is some news about the House Democrats' weekly meeting yesterday, most of which was about Democrats yelling INPEACH! while Nancy Pelosi gave them cold showers.)
Here's the thing:
In today's presser, Pelosi was clearer than ever about her feelings on impeachment -- she doesn't like it, and she'd really hate for the nation to get to a place where that's inevitable, she is just saying it would be truly terrible for them to have to do that -- but they might just be FORCED to go there. And wouldn't that be just terrible? Nancy Pelosi is praying about that just like she is praying for Trump, under a big oak tree that casts all the shade she threw at Donald Trump for her entire fucking presser.
Here, watch it all for yourself if you haven't seen it, since most Beltway journalists won't show you anything but that one snippet we referenced above.
Pelosi holds weekly news conference www.youtube.com
After Pelosi spent the first few minutes reciting a list of the 300 bills Democrats passed this week that might make life better for Americans if the Senate would fucking do something with them and then send them to President Twitter Time for his chicken-scratching signature, she noted how many children have now died in the custody of the Trump administration on the border, and then recited all the court cases Trump has lost this week, in his effort to do cover-ups to conceal all his crimes.
Then it was time to talk about Trump's little performance yesterday, when he noped out of their Infrastructure Week meeting and threw a pre-planned temper tantrum in the Rose Garden, supposedly because he was upset Pelosi called his cover-ups a "cover-up." Pelosi told reporters she was pretty sure the real reason he did that is because he's a loser who keeps losing in court, the walls are closing in, and he wanted to distract everyone with something out of his "bag of tricks" he likes to distract people with. Also one other thing:
PELOSI: I think what really got to him was these court cases and the fact that the House Democratic caucus is not on a path to impeachment, and that's where he wants us to be. And that, again with the "cover-up" -- which he understands is true -- just struck a chord. So it was really sad ...
And then immediately she started talking about Thomas Jefferson and infrastructure, and just let that hang there.
Do you see how she's fucking with his mind? She's pretty sure -- and we're pretty sure she's right -- that Trump wants nothing more right now than for the House Democrats to hop, skip and bumblefuck into a speedy impeachment, so that it can quickly go to the current Senate before things get too much worse for Trump, Mitch McConnell can throw a show trial, it'll lose, and then the GOP can hit the 2020 campaign running before the end of 2019.
Whereas Pelosi seems to be saying, " No, Donald, we're sorry . We're not handing you that ... yet . We're going to let alllllllllll these investigations get really nasty and let you lose in court a whole bunch more, and we're going to look at your taxes and your weird foreign money stuff and see who really owns your ass, and we're going to put every person you know in a chair in front of the appropriate House committee, and if they don't show up, they'll be held in contempt, maybe even under Congress's power of inherent contempt , and they'll be fined $25,000 a day, and then you'll lose some more in court over THAT ... and once we have ALL THE FACTS in our hands, well ... WHO KNOWS WHAT WE MIGHT DO? "
In other words, she's going to make him bleed out slowly (figuratively, of course!), and then when it's time, it will be time. Do you see how she's doing that?
In case you're skeptical that she really has a game here, you're in luck, because she told it to reporters a few minutes later:
PELOSI: Let me be really very clear. The president's behavior, in terms of his obstruction of justice, the things that he is doing, it's very clear, it's in plain sight. It cannot be denied. Ignoring subpoenas, obstruction of justice. Yes, these could be impeachable offenses. [...]
There are three things, you might understand it better if you remember these three things:
We want to follow the facts to get the truth to the American people, with the recognition, two, that no one is above the law, and three, that the president is engaged in a cover-up. And that is what my statement is.
How we deal with it is a decision that our caucus makes, and our caucus is very much saying, whatever we do, we need to be ready when we do it.
And I do think that impeachment is a very divisive place to go in our country, and we can get the facts to the American people through our investigation. It may take us to a place that is unavoidable in terms of impeachment.Or not.
In other words, relax , Donald Trump. (Or not.)
Pop quiz, everyone! Does anyone really think Nancy Pelosi does not already know we have had that fucker dead to rights to be impeached since about eight seconds after he lied his way through the oath of office? Of course she does! And when the time comes -- probably sooner than we think, we've got our betting pool on it happening around Labor Day -- the case will be airtight, and the public will understand that case better than they understand right now, and the public will be ready .
John Cassidy has a good piece in the New Yorker on the political game Pelosi is playing. He flags a current Monmouth poll that says that, despite the fact that 60 percent of Americans want Trump defeated in 2020, only 39 percent want him impeached and kicked out of office before that. There's ground to make up there, at least if Democrats want to refrain from blowing our load early and doing something that's going to bite us in the ass in the 2020 presidential election, and also the congressional elections.
Cassidy notes, just as Rick Wilson did this week, that in case Democrats haven't noticed, we have won a lot of battles the past couple of weeks, and as Rachel Maddow put it last night, the dam of Trump's obstruction and cover-ups is breaking. Adam Schiff's House Intelligence Committee is about to finally get Mueller Report counter-intel materials -- you know, the stuff about "Is He A Russian Agent, Or At Least Presidenting Under The Influence?" and other stuff like that. This is happening because the Department of Justice is starting to cave. Two judges have issued orders in the last couple weeks saying actually they're going to need the DOJ to unredact the Mueller Report for them. One of those judges, Emmet Sullivan, says the DOJ has to unredact the portions of the report on Michael Flynn for him and for the public by the end of this month. Two court rulings this week against Trump found that House subpoenas for his financial records from his accountants and his banks are valid and must be complied with. An IRS memo says actually Steven Mnuchin has to release Trump's taxes from his pearly white veneers, BECAUSE IT'S THE DAMN LAW.
Oh yeah and one other dam broke this week. The first Republican, Rep. Justin Amash, started calling for impeachment. We promise he will not be the last.
We quibble with only one part of Cassidy's piece, where he argues that Pelosi is mostly just focused on winning in 2020 the old-fashioned way. We think she is indeed focused on that, but -- and we don't have inside knowledge here, so we're just educatedly guessing -- we are pretty damn sure she also knows the House is going to start an impeachment inquiry, and she's going to be the one to have to call for it. So she will, with the most gravitas and anguish she can muster, reluctantly make that call when the time comes.
She's just going to agonize over it! You betcha.
We could be entirely wrong, but Pelosi is a boss, and that's how a boss would handle this. Even if it makes some people on Twitter mad.
As Wonkette Five Dollar Feminist AKA "Liz" wrote exactly one month ago, when this process was just beginning:
Yeah, we're a long way away from impeachment. Hours and hours and hours of excruciating, news-dominating, Trump-baiting hearings away. Take your time, Congressmen. Take your time.
And now we're a month further along in the process.
Hey, this piece is over, but do you want one more video of Pelosi just throwing heinous and entirely admirable shade today? A reporter asked her today about Kellyanne Conway, who complained yesterday that Pelosi wasn't "pro-woman" when she said she would address her remarks to the president, as opposed to "staff" like Conway, and who went on TV today and said Pelosi was treating her like a MAID or a common AIRLINE PILOT.
Pelosi's response? "I'm not going to talk about her." Might as well have said, "I've never heard of her."

Also too, hey this post is over, but you want a really gross fact about Kellyanne Conway pulling her chewed gum out of her mouth like a booger and rubbing it in somebody's hands?
Also too once more, hey this post is over, but you want an open thread? FINE, HAVE ONE.

Next she'll be doing "Bless his heart" with a very, very faint drawl.
You mean the way Congress "stalled" during the Watergate procedure? They never did impeach Nixon. They just investigated him and publicized it until his support washed away.
The process is well under way. Impeach does not allow for instant gratification.
