Minor correction from a Mexican history guy: The Republic of Texas tried to claim a big chunk of New Mexico (both while it was still part of Mexico, and after the US "intervention" of 1846-48). Millard Fillmore had to order the Army into New Mexico to protect Mexican citizens from marauding Texans (the white, slave-owning, English speaking kind of Texans), and eventually forced Texas to pay the federal government for the chunks of what's now west Texas they'd occupied that were part of New Mexico.
