Donald Trump Just Askin' If Marco Rubio Is Also A Foreign From Canada

Totally fair question

While Donald Trump technically won the South Carolina primary on Saturday, in that he received more votes than anyone else and also got all of the delegates, Marco Rubio also won, in a way. In the way that he didn't come in last place and have to drop out like some kind of Jeb Bush. So, sensing the potential threat posed by the upstart Florida senator who refuses to let a little thing like losing get in the way of pretending he's winning, Trump is focusing his birthering expertise on Mr. Perpetual Runner-Up:

Everyone knows that retweets are not endorsements, unless they are. So it's not as if Trump is telling his 6.3 million followers this "slam dunk" evidence proves CruzandRubio are secret Muslim usurpers from Kenya:

Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio have had ample time to have their respective eligibility issues resolved before a proper court. So, why didn’t they? The reason is crystal clear. They couldn’t risk being declared ineligible, and thought it much wiser to simply say nothing, and if challenged on the “natural born” issue to simply declare themselves eligible and move on to the next question. The RNC is batshit crazy if they even consider nominating Canadian Cruz! Same goes for Marco Rubio. Both are ineligible, and they both understand that. They just figured they could pull a Barack Hussein.

We get -- and truly, genuinely appreciate -- the legitimate constitutional question of whether Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada, is eligible for the presidency. We are not quite as clear on the argument against Marco Rubio, who was not born in Canada, but rather, in Florida, a place that certainly does a good impression of a bizarro foreign country, but according to Mapquest is technically still part of U.S. America.

So on Sunday's "This Week" with George Stephanopoulous, Trump explained that he isn't really questioning whether Rubio, like Cruz, is maybe a, you know, "Canadian." Unless maybe he is?

TRUMP: I'm not really that familiar with Marco's circumstances --

STEPHANOPOULOS: But then why retweet it?

TRUMP: -- problem but I think that -- because I'm not sure. I mean, let people make their own determination. I know Ted is being now -- I think he's being sued by somebody having nothing to do with me, by the way. [...]

STEPHANOPOULOS: You're really not sure that Marco Rubio is eligible to run for president?

You're really not sure?

TRUMP: I don't know. I really -- I've never looked at it, George. I honestly have never looked at it. As somebody said, he's not. And I retweeted it.

Somebody said, OK? Don't blame Trump here. He doesn't even know what he's talking about! He's just putting it out there, for the American people to decide whether Marco Rubio's name is a little too foreign-sounding, and his parents are a little too born-in-Cuba, and he speaks Spanish a little too good. It's not as if Trump is demanding to see Rubio's long-form birth certificate. Yet.
