Donald Trump Really Wanted Invite To Chelsea Clinton's Wedding. Probably To Look For Illegals.

Donald Trump does stuff, and you don't always know why. You don't need to know why. For instance, in 2010, before he'd decided to be a birther, Trump for some reason thought it was absolutely necessary to show up at the wedding of Chelsea Clinton, according to a new book about the Clintons. In an excerpt from the upcoming  Man of the World: The Further Endeavors of Bill Clinton,  Joe Conason suggests Trump felt he was owed an invite from the Clintons, because that's the kind of guy he is:

And finally there was Donald Trump, who had hosted a somewhat reluctant Bill and Hillary at his third wedding in 2005. The real estate mogul was the sort of person who, though not an actual friend, still aspired to attend Chelsea’s wedding, which he clearly considered a prestigious event. An avid reader of gossip columns, he had probably seen mentions of a guest list that was expected to include the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Barbra Streisand, Steven Spielberg, and Ted Turner (none of whom ultimately turned up).

And having given Bill Clinton free access to his northern Westchester golf club, Trump National, where he proudly hung photos of the former president -- and had even cleared the links once for the Clintons to play on Bill’s birthday, Trump may well have felt they owed him. So when the wedding invitation didn’t arrive, he called Doug Band to try to invite himself.

I’m supposed to be at the wedding, Doug,’ said Trump briskly, ‘but I didn’t receive the invitation, and I need to know where to go.’ Band knew Trump wasn’t on the list, of course, and politely urged him to get in touch with Chelsea for directions. At that point, the would-be wedding crasher apparently gave up.

Gee, that's not very persistent of him. You'd almost get the impression he's impulsive, even flighty, driven by motives that strike him as extremely important at the moment but then, once he faces some resistance, not so important after all. Then again, perhaps that snub is what made him want to be president, so he could get his revenge on the Clintons and never ever invite them to a state dinner. Or perhaps he simply wanted to make weddings great again. Also, sounds like a book we might just skip -- we're not sure we can handle such heavy-duty political analysis.

New York magazine also notes that Trump later dismissed an ad for the estate where the wedding was held -- and which touted the "recent celebrity wedding" as one of its selling points -- in typical Trumpspeak:

“Over the years, I’ve seen many tacky things take place in the wonderful world of real estate, but never have I seen anything so bad,” the Donald told “Page Six.” “It was disgusting, and if I were Bill or Hillary Clinton, I would never speak to their ‘good friend,’ the owner, again.”

Not that he was bitter or anything about not having been invited.
