"Democrats should still be able to work their way through many if not all of the 30 remaining Biden judicial nominees awaiting confirmation. That would cut deeply into the 42 current federal judicial vacancies,"
HR 82 passed, with a lot of drama and dirty dealings, attempting to block it, in the House 327-75, and now the identical bill, S597, is waiting for a vote in the Senate. These bills repeal the windfall elimination provision, and the government pension offset, which is legislation that was passed under Reagan 40 years ago, at which point the legislators who passed it exempted themselves from the consequences.
The WEP cuts earned Social Security benefits for people who also earned pensions that did not pay into Social Security. The GPO cuts or completely eliminates Social Security survivor benefits for widows and widows who also get a similar pension. This is a simplification, but there are millions of people impacted by this (not, however, the legislators who passed this— bears repeating).
HR 82 was sitting in committee for almost 2 years, and it was very clear the people in charge of the committee intended to let it die there. It took a Hail Mary pass of a discharge petition, which was illegally blocked and then unblocked conditionally, to get it to the floor for a vote, where it passed emphatically. With only a few weeks left of the Senate in session this year, it’s a real nailbiter to see if it will cross the threshold. Your government dollars at work, people.
It may be an ill wind blowing, but I wouldn’t mind seeing the sails fill on one this anyway.
Also - hopefully, this will more frequently prompt the question in our minds “What’s going on in the back room?” when Republicans are giving us all this literal circus up front
"Salon helpfully points out that in fact Trump posted the complaint hours after he was joined by several GOP senators that he’d invited to watch the SpaceX launch in Texas, which occurred at the same time as the Senate vote."
MAGAt dilemma: Do I accept the invitation and kiss his ass...or do I go to work and block judges like he said he wants me to?
Good doggies! Are there any small dogs who aren't as, er, talkative, as some I've been around?
I had a lab puppy once who got to be nearly a year old before he let out a real bark. A housemate, a small hair-trigger shepherd mix, goaded him into letting fly for the first time at a stranger in the front yard, with a single, loud, bass "Boof!"
The lab was at least as surprised as the rest of us. The shepherd even stopped to stare at him in amazement. That's what I'm more temperamentally suited for.
OMG, these two little girls are talking to me constantly. I mean talking. I ask them questions and they answer, wait for me to respond and then continue. i understand them. Have I finally taken complete leave of my senses? Ready for the loony bin?
Please watch Reps Jasmine Crocker and Summer Lee let Republicans know White man represent 31% of the population but 62% of officeholders -- and what that means when they try to exclude literally all people in federal service who are not White men
Yeah, only Republicans are allowed to do lame duck things.

Why can't Biden just fill all 42?
Good time to get some bills passed, too.

Whine, whine, whine. Trump is the whiner-in-chief.
Send in the clowns!!
Ta, Dok. I hope we get some more judges confirmed.
Time for Biden to belatedly fulfill Congress's request for Mangolini's tax returns: better late than never.
Thanks for the Happy Doodle Puppy Pic. I needed that.
If a poodle and a wolf were crossed, would that be a timberdoodle?

A lot of members (thank goodness) have thoughts on this execrable “destroy DEI” so-called “legislation” House Republicans are introducing right now
(with the thought of actually getting SECOND-CLASS CITIZENSHIP passed and codified once Republicans control both the Senate and White House)
Some that people may find the most powerful and persuasive are Rep Moskowitz, Rep Raskin, Rep Jasmine Crocker and Rep Summer Lee

And of course the fact that the GOP senators aren't there can't possibly be Trump's fault.
Usually I'm partial to the bigger dogs, but that is one joyful little furball romping!
I keep downsizing Started with Irish Setters now down to Maltese. Got two of them, sisters, terrible bad, into everything, but too cute to scold.

You are both sane and fortunate to have such charming conversationalists hanging out with you!
I vote for always using a cute animal pic instead of one of these many cretins.

I hope some of these appointees are going to the Republican branches of our federal judiciary. 5th circuit? Others?
Please tell me Dems aren't gonna play "nice" and respect any seats being held open for fascists.
Manchin, but is he a Dem still?
So what can Matt Gaetz look forward to now that he has dropped out of Congress and the nomination for AG?
