Late to the party but I must add - Brown was also convicted without having had his say. In his case, though, the death penalty was applied before the interrogation, which makes getting his side of things more difficult.

Police are supposed to be trained to overcome both their own terror and someone trying to do them harm. That's also why psychological screening is a thing.
