"The top election official in Maricopa County is a Republican, their Supreme Court is all Republican, and Republicans control the Legislature. Arizona Republicans have already been voter-suppressing as hard as they can"
Fortunately the top election official in Maricopa County is still Stephen Richter, who, while a Republican, is not AT ALL a MAGA, guy. He's battled them for the last four years over this bullshit.
And the Lege hasn't bee able to do a whole lotta voter-supressing the last two years, either, since Governor Katie Hobbs' veto-stamping arm looks like Quagmire's right arm after he got internet on that episode of Family Guy. (she cleared the old record number of vetoes, held by the LAST Democratic governor Janet Napolitano by three times Janet's numbers)
To avoid a lot of this insanity, I voted last week. Had the ballot sent to me, asked a sibling to witness my signature, and dropped it off at my city hall. Now, I live in a pretty red, very white Wisconsin town so I doubt any fuckery is going to happen, but I’m paranoid so I didn’t want to risk having an AR-15-carrying MAGAt watch over me while I cast my ballot. I doubt that scenario would end well.
They’ve been bombarded with the idea that their antiquated bigotries are the “true” beliefs of the American people and that leftist ideas – e.g. abortion rights, civil rights, national health care, progressive taxation, etc. – are so abominable that they can’t possibly be popular. Therefore the only way Democrats can “win” is by fraud and that any means to stop these illegitimate elections is justified.
That’s what you’re fighting; the belief that your very existence is illegitimate.
they want to destroy the thing that gives them the freedom to carry on like pork chops (thanks granddad for that turn of phrase) in public without consequences. critical thinking, not so much
It is so sad that many people in this country are going to be afraid voting in person. And to be a volunteer poll worker and have to fear violence...it's insane! I did consider volunteering to work at an election site in 2016 but it already didn't feel safe so I signed up to drive people to vote. And things have just gotten worse.
We need a federal law, generously prosecuted, with significant penalties, agaInst death threats and cyberterrorism. I live just outside of Springfield Ohio. All of that bullshit, every bit of it, started out online and was promoted online until that bullshit got completely out of hand. At one point the Haitians, beautiful, tax paying hard-working people, were afraid to leave their house , a direct product of the cyber terrorism bullshit. I can't think of anything more Unamerican. The people that did that suffer no consequences. The Clerk of Courts in Bumfuck Iowa shouldn't have to worry about their children being kidnapped because they processed election paperwork in a timely fashion. It's terrorism. Ignoring it's worse than negotiating.
This is a major tool of fascism. Shutting it down goes a long way towards shutting them down.
i sincerely hope that OHJB is ready to flex his newly found presidential immunity, it may be necessary after the shitshow we’re bound to see if donnie loses …
It doesn’t help that we’re being flooded with bullshit rightwing polls that are pushing the averages red, giving Trump 3-4 more points that he’ll probably receive in the election. Thus, if the polling average shows Trump up by three, it’s probably statistically tied.
The stage is set to cry “rigged” and “stollen” after a Trump loss. They’ll point to polls that show Trump winning in certain states and use them to justify whatever fuckery it will take to flipped the election to Trump.
How will the Intimidators know who to harass in the polling line? By the color of their skin? Or are they wearing some insignia among themselves to self identify, and anyone without it must be the enemy? I’m glad some of the states are taking it seriously. I feel so bad for the election workers who, along with their kids are harassed at home. What kind of shithead does that? And isn’t it a crime to swat someone? Tracing calls to the police is pretty fucking easy, right? But I’ve heard of only one person being arrested, and it was after they’d done it many times.
Domestic terrorism was a lot easier to enforce before it was legal and socially acceptable for white people to openly carry weapons everywhere in red states. I do know that if the militias were Black, the cops would have no problem enforcing domestic terrorism acts.
I have been substitute-teaching pretty aggressively this school year, but I may take election week off and invest in some heavy drinking.

Very cool, very normal.
My first thought was horror, then depressing realization that school kids already go through the same thing... also because Republicans.
This is fine!
I voted last week in Ohio. Drama free.
The only drama was that both mine and my wife's absentee ballot request forms never made it to the Board of Elections.

Ta, Marcie. Shit like this makes me glad to be a New Yorker, even if we do have one of the worst mayors in the world.
Speaking as a guy born and raised in Detroit, all towns have their ups and downs.
Fucking terrifying. Vote early, Wonkettes, especially if you're in a red state. Polling day is going to be...tense.
I did vote (in NC) on Saturday, but I have also signed up to be a poll greeter on Election Day so maybe I need to price out kevlar vests?

OHJB has no presidential immunity. There's a D after his name.
SCOTUS should have nipped this in the bud when the repos rioted to stop the count in Florida in 2000

They will harass nonwhites, no matter who they intend to vote for.
Please don’t throw up your hands! It causes a terrible mess all the harder to clean up because now you can’t help clean up without intact hands.
