I have trouble understanding this shutdown gambit...they been pulling it since the 90s, has it EVER worked the way they thought it would?

They keep getting reelected. So they have that going for them.

Yeah but statistically, when the government shuts down, don't the Republicans take a hit at the next election cycle?

Not a big enough one. Too many dead dog Rebs out there (Vote for a dead dog over any non-Republican).

Know what’s incredible about this looming shutdown? Repubs think they have the moral and public high ground. Jfc.

These maga fools deserve all the mockery they are receiving for wasting everyone's time on this effing sad attempt to smear Biden.

Point of order: if Rep. Crockett participated in a drinking game that required 35 shots to be downed, she would be dead, not drunk. That's roughly two full bottles of tequila right there.

The difference between the two parties is just so stark. If only the MAGA bubble (like the majority of mouth-breathers in MTG’s district, and all sympathies to the small minority of long suffering rational thinkers who doubtless live there too) checked out a legitimate news source and were capable of independent thought and shame once in a while. But no, tribal warfare continues to win the day.

"As Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-New York) said on MSNBC last night, House Republicans will be “literally biting the hands that feed them.”

Oh, like their constituents do EVERY TIME they vote? NO SYMPATHY HERE.

Right. Also, don't use the shutdown to short your cafeteria workers. They prepare your food, and they will remember.

I think you misunderstood her point. She was referring to the contract workers in the House, DC residents, who will likely never see the money they lose in the shutdown.

GaseousAnomaly's avatar

No, I understood. Those who vote for Republicans vote against their own interests EVERY TIME, unless, of course, they're disproportionately wealthy, in which case the GOP is ALL ABOUT THEM.

How does this connect to the contract workers at the Capitol?

Expand full comment
GaseousAnomaly's avatar

There wouldn't be an issue with said workers getting fairly paid for their work if not for the Republicans throwing a hissy fit about EVERYTHING and DEMANDING things go their way. THAT'S how it connects.

I haven't been following this because I figured it would be performative nonsense for the base.

Do I correctly assume that the GOP thinks "impeach" means, "summarily remove from office, because he hurt my fee fees by stomping a mudhole in my cult leader?"

Ya, that’s exactly what they mean.

I meant to post this https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/sep/29/poll-watcher-georgia-elections-case-scott-hall-pleads-guilty-guilty but my 'puter punked out on me; didn't even know what I had written had posted. Given the summary sentence, it's pretty clear he's turned state's evidence.

In the meantime, Smith is back in court asking (yet again) for a gag order on Trump, only with more urgency: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/sep/29/donald-trump-2020-election-prosecution-gag-order Hopefully, he'll get it this time.

They should do a gag order that says he can only insult other candidates, that would turn down the noise a bit and not interfere with his "freedom of speech" crap claims.
