That graphic used in the tweet above reminds me of the line from "Silverado":

"We're gonna give you a fair trial -- followed by a first-class hanging."

Michigan abolished the death penalty back in the 19th century. And we have become an urban shithole like Trump forecasts.

I had hoped that when the drug cocktail for lethal injections became harder to obtain, states would start reexamining the entire death penalty system. But I vastly underestimated how creative republicans can be in coming up with new and increasingly crueler ways to kill people and call it justice.

"And Democrats should put 'opposing capital punishment' back in their platform, too"

Yes! I remember when it was a major issue on the left (along with no nukes and banning handguns). This century I've run into too many "liberals" who support the death penalty.

Smothering someone with nitrogen is considered the most humane way possible to slaughter chickens.

I repeat: CHICKENS.

A chicken does not know it's about to die as its oxygen levels drop. A chicken does not pant frantically out of a reflexive desire to keep its lungs full -- to live. A chicken does not struggle to retain a few last blessed moments of consciousness, knowing they will be the last ever.

Albert Camus said that for a murder to be as horrible as legal execution, the murderer would have to inform the victim of the exact date he would kill them, and then hold them helpless until that date: "Such a monster does not exist in civil[ian] life."

I think it's directly about the Calvinist Evangelical obsession with "Judgement", ie God HAD to murder Jesus or it wouldn't have been FAIR." And people cay /chatbots/ hallucinate.

The whole "drug cocktail" thing is ridiculous, it is not at all difficult to kill a human as so many have demonstrated. Drugs are an attempt to be not doing it while you're doing it, see, he just nodded off to sleep and we can deliver the body to the relatives all together and peaceful-like. If that's what they really wanted all the fentanyl they would ever need is surely somewhere inside the walls already, but they are just confused, they imagine they will be Justified by their Paperwork. V ugly.

Let's not mince words. Zeisloft's post is a pro-lynching meme. And that's what the extremist right's vociferous support of the death penalty is all about. It is not about law or crime or justice, it is about putting fear in the hearts of THOSE PEOPLE.

I do not think VP Harris or the DNC have had a change of heart regarding the death penalty. I would not be surprised IF a Blue Tsunami comes to fruition that with absolute majorities the Democrats would get rid of it legislatively. However, it is best NOT to give MAGA any ammunition when trying to woo over the center right and "undecideds".

I think it is a smart move to remove the issue from the platform for now. Keep the voters focused on body autonomy and the "Opportunity Economy". I think the Democrats will be in a better position to push forward with more deviceive issues once we can remind the public that we can ACTUALLY govern.

Let me say first that I have always been a dyed-in-the-wool liberal. Second, clearly we should move heaven and earth to make sure that anybody we convict for murder -- for any crime -- is actually guilty. Of course!

That said, I have to part with lefty-orthodoxy and state that I am not opposed to capital punishment. My logic is straightforward: We're all doomed to die. We aren't all doomed to spend decades in an 8x8 room with a bunch of degenerates. Which is more natural?

I got a lot of upvotes the other day for my brief li'l conversion narrative of why I've come to unequivocally oppose the death penalty. Thanks, everybody! I won't repeat that here. I guess I'd like to ask the open question of - what is the best way the Democratic Party can include the abolition of the death penalty as a plank in the party platform without feeding into the facile 'Democrats soft on crime" narrative. It's a sticky wicket! It's fairly straightforward to explain its ineffectiveness or its misapplication, given a few paragraphs and citations to do so, but how can the message be reduced to some nifty sound bites?

I know that sounds reductive, literally. It is! But in this dayanage of the TikToks and the Instaface and the Xchats and what have you, it seems like it's life or death when it comes to political messaging.

The death penalty just can't be applied in a way that honors civilized society. Because it's so extreme and irreversible, our justice system would have to be perfect; it would have to be certain that it never makes mistakes. Which, obviously, it isn't. Then there's the ghoulish "tinkering with the machinery [and pharmacology] of death," often decades after the crime took place.
