Hmmm. What struck me in particular was Farley's assertion that AI would take all the white collar jobs.

May his be the first!

Wait till trump takes credit for by putting out a post on his low class, anti-social media app and congratulating himself. But the truth is the strike was ended under Biden. He joined the picket lines which in turn pressured the corporations to give up more than they ever would have done if not for the massive strikes and the support of the Biden administration.

Blue collar jobs, particularly of the assembly line variety are going to disappear as fast as white collar jobs with advancements in AI and robotics. Compound that with the Trump administration gutting the Inflation Reduction Act, and manufacturing jobs will be trending downward again by the end of the year.

No one is really prepared for the disruption that is coming, though shorter term the safest jobs are probably those that currently require human interfacing and/or have flexible enough duties and low enough pay that replacing them with service robots won’t be immediately cost effective.

If your job requires little to no face to face interaction and is fairly repetitive in terms of task requirements ( physical or mental), it probably won’t be there in five years.

So Elon has billions of dollars worth of government contracts -- and he's forming his own political party to oppose Assmouth, who has politicized every government contract he's run across?! This should end well. I mean, it really could be the man-love first step towards reconciliation and maybe I'm just too girly to have ever tried something this stupid, but fuck it, I hope just these two fuckers completely drive each other over the cliff. It's too bad there's no way they won't duke it out without destroying zillions of jobs and dollars and lives. But if these two massive egos contribute to their parties never winning an election ever again, then let them go at it.

To me it all comes down to corporate feudalism, in this case the technocrat class versus the rentier class. Both of them are mere symptoms of the the problem. America is long overdue for social revolution. The sop was FDR's New Deal, which averted it, but now that is history.

So. Stayed home. Did nothing of importance. Watched Collingwood lay some serious smackdown on Carlton (the AFL team, not the Fresh Prince character) to maintain their dominance in the league. Washed dishes because Mrs. Hero made a lovely dinner for the two of us, despite serious pain (she insisted, and I don't argue with an Iowa girl). Solved various and sundry puzzles.

Now a hot shower, followed by more doing of nothing. Hope your day was as pleasant.

Thanks for the suggestions but none of them worked for Linux and I figured it out for myself.

And, yes, dryer lint libulz!

Expand full comment
GreyLadyBast's avatar

Dryer lint's a good comparison, though. It looks softer and more innocent than it is, is the product of the steady degradation of things of value, is easy to overlook or ignore until your clogged vent burns yoir house down, so it seems like a minor problem until it's all of a sudden huge, and takes constant, annoying, apparently pointless vigilance to avoid the terrible fate that does not provide value beyond that.

IANAD, I'ma guess that nothing caused the *air quotes* epidemic, but instead, modern science has been able to more accurately diagnose autism, thus resulting in an increase of cases, which may be misconstrued by lesser minds as an epidemic.

Kinda like when President Moron didn't want people to be tested for Covid because it would raise the number of people with the disease, thus making him look bad (like he needed help).

But what do I know?

That study came out years ago, and I have long Covid, so I don’t remember the source but I’m autistic and the son of scientists so I’ll buy that explanation. I do know for sure that it manifests more profoundly in my son, whose mother is epileptic and who was on anticonvulsants that are contraindicated for women of childbearing age.

You could look up a landmark English case from a few years ago when a jury determined that a young girl’s extreme autism was actionably caused by diesel exhaust because her family lived downwind of a major trucking thoroughfare.
