My paternal uncle was a Leftenant in the British Army. He was listed as missing at Dunkirk, but was found in a French hospital. He recovered, was aided by the French Resistance to return to England and was able to carry the fight again to the Nazis. He survived the war but one of his daughters was killed in a German bombing raid. He lived in London until his death years later.

My maternal uncle fought against the Japanese from island to island in the Pacific. He died just a few years ago. He used to say that he couldn't remember all the names of the islands his unit landed on.

My Father and two uncles did so, as did my father in law and 4 of my wife's uncles. One of my wife's uncles died in the process.
