"Under current immigration law, the bar for deportation is committing two petty crimes, but this law would allow deportation after a single arrest for a minor offense."

Small objection to the way this is being framed in the news - undocumented people can already be (and frequently are) deported based solely on the fact that they're undocumented. It's not like you get a free pass on a couple of crimes before they're allowed to start trying to deport you. My understanding is that this new rule would make more people subject to mandatory detention, meaning the person must remain in custody until an immigration judge decides whether they have the right to remain in the US or will be deported. There's already an extensive list of crimes that will make you subject to mandatory detention; this is adding to that list. Not saying I approve of the current system, but that's how it generally works right now. The way the new rule is being mischaracterized is a problem because people who are otherwise progressive on immigration issues are more likely to say 'well, why shouldn't we be allowed to deport people who've been charged with a crime?', instead of 'why should people be detained at taxpayer expense over an arrest when they're innocent until proven guilty?', especially since people generally can't resolve their criminal charges while in ICE custody.

I feel like there’s been a major cultural rightward shift with this election.

Something that won’t be undone for at least a decade.

Hurdles that were overcome like gay marriage, gays in the military, women’s roles in the military, work place discrimination laws, etc. are going to be clawed back.

Right-wing propaganda seems to get conservative white people to jump when it says jump. Doesn’t matter what the issue is, these white conservatives fall in line with the new outrage, and they are the largest single bloc of voters in the country.

Yeah, MAGAturd assholes always vote. No, that does not mean we are powerless nor does it mean that all our advances will be 'clawed back'.

The Nazis are loud now because THEY CAN BE, not because there is a 'cultural shift.' They can be because semi-decent people have decided their Fuckbook and Twitter accounts are the hills to die on--who needs actual voting? LMAO!

Lurches towards fascism worldwide are not 'shifts'; they happen cyclically, and they invariably happen on a basis of hatred and atavistic xenophobia. You want a reason? Start with billionaire sociopaths owning mass media AND 'social media' lock, stock, and barrel. Nothing about the tired, ugly, ancient trope of 'outrage' and claimed victimhood is even SLIGHTLY NEW.

This bill is too overbroad in how it would affect the way of states vs. the feds. So I see the problem this law would pose as illustrated in the second part of this piece, but I don't see anything wrong with deporting an undocumented person, whether caught doing a crime or not. Aren't they, by definition, doing a crime just by being undocked? And isn't it true that if the bad guy here had been deported, or at least not released, after his arrest he would not have killed Ms. Riley? I mean, if I'm in Switzerland for example, and do a crime, aren't they going to deport my ass? That's it. That's all I got. I can say no more.

I mean, have you seen the upholstery on these fine seats?

The exclusive, fantastic view.

And you never get the bill.

The dining? Superb. World-class chefs, eager to please.

And you never get the bill.

Servants bow to you, anticipating any need at any time of day.

And you never get the bill.

Once you're on the gravy train, you'll do anything to stay.

It's far outside the world of normies and beyond human experience to comprehend.

I think it's reasonably safe to say that many of the American People, bless their stupid, illiterate, withered hearts, voted for Donald Trump to relieve themselves of any need to think about the logic that should go into government policy. Now it just needs to meet tests like "Is it cruel, irrational, and destructive enough?"

Okay, so here's my idea; what if we created a group within the Democratic party to distinguish ourselves from the entrenched, status-quo loving Democrats intent on reenacting the same failures over and over? Something like the American Worker's Establishment (AWE)...

Fetterman is the Sinema of Joe Leibermans. That was self evident when he ran for office. I'm done with hoodie bro. He doesn't want to wear business attire when he is doing business, fine. I won't give campaign money ever again to people who are not serious. In two years we either win with a Democrat of the Rethugs take the seat. As it is they have control of it anyway.

Republicans with a moderate Democratic president - Fuck this guy, full on obstruction, we gotta kill his administration.

Democrats with a bug nut lunatic delusional freak Republican president? - Uh, we can work with this guy.

By and large I'm disgusted with the pusillanimous cowards leading the democratic party. Republicans are gonna republican, but democrats don't have to go along with it and pretend cooperation.

Fuck this is so asymmetric as to be a completely lost FUBAR situation. SFAICT the dems are quite happy being subservient lick spittle's for DJT and the fascist party.

Neat.

What is clear is that there will be no serious political opposition to the new fascist regime. The Flying Spaghetti Monster save us...

ReThugs are all obstructionist because they are desperate to hold on the source of their paychecks.

Dems go full blown appeasement because they are desperate to hold on to source of their paychecks.

The system is broke broke broke. Are the jobs that good that people will DO ANYTHING to hold on to them?

Actually, the Dems probably voted for it because of the ability for states to sue the feds. Four years of FAFO for MAGA courts.
