I gotta say that even with good ideas being shared at home, kids pick up the values of their peers. If you don't like the values your peers are teaching your kids, that's a valid reason to move that wasn't mentioned above.

I'm not trying to be an extremist shouting "MOVE" at all costs, but as a teen I spent more time chatting with my friends, collectively, than with either of my parents. If I hadn't been able to find good ones, that would have made difficult teenage years more difficult. Please understand I'm not saying that ALL the kids in a town have to be cool, but if your kids can't find 2-3 core friends each that reflect acceptance and good values back to them, that's a problem.

This is similar to the "community is kind of a parent" statement Sara made, but subtly different b/c it's easy to overlook that kids parent each other. Kids say stupid shit and their friends either encourage the stupidity or rein it in. And they learn from each other. A bad crowd can become worse over time. A good one becomes better as they grow toward adulthood.

Pay attention to the peers, is what I'm saying. And there are lots of reasonably good, reasonably rural places to move in blue states. Bend, Tillamook, Eugene, Ashland, Yamhill County, Hillsboro, and Brookings are all far enough away from Portland that you can find reasonably priced places to live either in the smaller cities or just outside of them, but all are also places with strong liberal pockets as well as a Blue state government that will both invest in public education and also protect your family from the worst legislative ideas of the Right Wing. A number of these places are majority GOP or GOP + LeanGOP, but there are plenty of good families with plenty of good kids for yours to find the right support and influences. You don't have to head to SanFran or Seattle or NYC or Portland. Rural areas in Blue states are as beautiful as the rural areas of Red states.

I hope you and your fam get what you need.

Tonight the Empire State Building is in red, black and green in honor of Black history month. Very windy out, I had to keep a nice hold on the tripod.
