The system itself has multiple, redundant methods to do this, but one way these things transfer data back and forth is via radio. Now, the US Army doesn't just broadcast missile launcher data on FM 97.7, like your car radio would pick up. No, it broadcasts on multiple frequencies at once, and the signal is encrypted. The radios need to be programmed specifically to pick up the signal, and we had this small computer that would program the radios.
That's what I needed the secret clearance for -- to operate that small computer. At no point did I actually know what the encryption scheme on it was, but I still needed the clearance just to use the computer.
I believe he splits his time between here and there. But his husband is a Brazilian citizen, as are the 2 kids they're raising (I forget if it was a formal adoption or some other arrangement), so he clearly has no skin in the game when it comes to the US being a functional democracy.
