Grace Adler isn't a racist or a blacklister. Trump's confused her with Republicans.
Donald Trump named names today on Twitter when he attacked private citizen Debra Messing, who made our life worth living in the '90s. The bully in chief called the "Will & Grace" star a "McCarthy-style racist." Trump speaks from experience, because he's a racist and his mentor and hero, Roy Cohn, was Joseph McCarthy's right-hooved man.

Conservative commentator Terence Williams, who is apparently black and mentally stable, tried to make the #RacistDebraMessing hashtag happen early this week. Rudy Giuliani claimed recently that liberals "demean"the word racist, but he was just talking about how we fling it around willy-nilly to describe white supremacists, especially the ones in the White House. Messing however earned the racist title because she "promoted a message calling black Trump supporters mentally ill." That's a really mean thing to say about exactly 13 black people. OK, we're not being fair. The National Center for Public Policy Research posted about Messing's"disturbing tweet" and cited apoll from always wrong Zogby being even wronger than usual and putting Trump's approval among black voters at 28 percent, or less than syphilis. Trump actually enjoys the support of "42,000 black Americans." (Don't look at us, that's their math.) Why, that's enough perfectly sane black people to form a small town. We can call it "Trumpsylvania," where the official pastime is tap dancing.
Conservative media repeated the claim that Messing accused black conservatives of Trump-related craziness. Messing deleted her original tweet but screenshots are forever. Let's see what she actually said.

Messing does not in fact call black Trump supporters mentally ill. She says, "THANK YOU #ALABAMA" like she's ending a concert. All she did was share a story about a Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama, that put up a sign stating: "A black vote for Trump is mental illness" backed with "A white vote for Trump is pure racism." This would normally receive the "religious freedom" pass, but the message isn't some garbage about how God got your gender right the first time. The sign's author is New Era Baptist Church pastor Michael Jordan, who is not Gov. Kay Ivey in costume but an actual black man.
JORDAN: God motivates me to take a stand for what's right. Read the Bible. And look in the White House. If they're calling me a racist, look in the White House. When you vote for Donald Trump, you are supporting institutionalized racism.
Jordan has put up signs outside his church condemning gentrification and George Zimmerman's acquittal. He's somehow still alive. Messing just needs to fly Jordan to DC and have him stand behind Mark Meadows. That should end this whole "Grace Adler is racist" nonsense.
😡 I’M OFFENDED! @DebraMessing promoted a Message Calling Black Trump Supporters Mentally ill. She want all Trump… https: //t.co/JGkcMNsjzF

We don't personally think all black Trump supporters are mentally ill. They're not the Joker. Your common Diamond and Silk or Terrence Williams are more like the dumb mooks who willingly work for an insane clown just as long as the checks clear. Messing apologized for her "reckless" tweet, so we can now move on and focus on her red-baiting. (There's a Lucille Ball joke in there somewhere.)
Last week, Messing responded to a Hollywood Reporter story about a Trump fundraiser in Beverly Hills. She tweeted, "Please print a list of all attendees please. The public has a right to know." Conservatives rushed to condemn this as "McCarthyism." Sen. McCarthy was a scumbag and a Republican who used the federal government to destroy the careers of people who were possibly Communists or who associated with Communists or had a dream about communism. It's somewhat of a laugh that Republicans accuse Democrats of "McCarthyism" when they've cheered on "Obama's a secret Muslim" conspiracy theories and called anyone who supports a marginal tax rate higher than 5 percent a "socialist." Messing and her co-star Eric McCormack would just prefer not to work with people who contribute to a racist's campaign. This is freedom of association, a constitutionally protected right.
Please print a list of all attendees please. The public has a right to know. https: //t.co/YV4UoxrPHI

There is a significant difference between Will and Grace and the House Un-American Activities Committee. We agree with Jennifer Rubin that Trump's enablers deserve to be shunned by decent people. Conservatives have gone so far as to accuse Messing of trying to "out" Trump supporters. This is a repulsive co-opting of the ongoing struggle for LGBT equality. Trump supporters might not get invited to the best Martha's Vineyard parties but they don't risk losing their jobs or getting evicted as a matter of policy. Antonio Sabato Jr. might claim he was "blacklisted" because he supports Trump, but it's more likely he's just on a list of actors named "Antonio Sabato Jr." No one wants to hire the guy on that list, and it has nothing to do with politics.
Messing and McCormack aren't Hollywood heavyweights, but they are possibly willing to turn down jobs from any bigwigs who are in Trump's pocket. They're putting themselves on a list of actors with human souls, and we fully approve.

I'm curious... what is the distinction?
History Corner: McCarthy either deliberately (I think deliberately) or just because he embraced some bugfuck crazy ideology went after labour movement people and liberal types. It wasn’t just people who had some relationship to “communism“ or the Communist Party. The fundamental McCarthy thing was to ask somebody who he knew was not a communist Are you now or have you ever been a communist? On TV. And because of the craziness afoot in the land people just believed these people were. The fact they denied it was taken as evidence it was true. 🤦🏻♀️ Calling someone a racist without adequate proof is not McCarthyism. The thing the person is accused of has to be something that the whole of society goes absolutely fucking apeshit about. And you would lose your job, be blacklisted so you couldn’t get another one. All the employers just went along with this, no one was making them. Also there were either non- or really crappy laws about having to have a good reason to fire somebody. Last bit: the “or ever were“ bit in McCarthy’s question was because it was the 50s, middle-age people had been young during the fight against Hitler and some of them joined the Communist Party because of that. Did nothing and quit a couple years later. He was trying to hoover up all of them.
