is there one particular tax cheater that every republican in congress is required to lick the taint of though? could he be the reason why they're so against the IRS going after rich people who only pay $750 a year in taxes?

I am so old, I remember when President Jimmy Carter proposed beefing up the IRS to increase tax collections. Repugs have been lying about it for at least that long.

Sometimes words mean exactly what they appear to mean. Laffer, indeed.

And yet they have plenty of time to send letters to my Moms and Pops clients for failing to pay or failing to file when they did both under the special extension for Texas on time. The IRS just doesn't have enough people to open the mail, and lately even the hotline number for preparers goes unanswered. People (little people) are getting harassed and have no way to dispute the claim.

Certain politicians have been opposed to income taxes since Lincoln first added them in 1863. In fact, in the late 1800s the Supreme Court ruled them unconstitutional, resulting in the 16th amendment authorizing income taxes. Since the 1950s abolishing the IRS has been a goal of organizations like the John Birch Society and more recently, the entire Republican Party. Of course, over the past 40 years the amount of federal revenue from corporate income taxes has almost vanished, down to about 7%, and we know that the higher your income once you reach a certain income level the lower your actual tax rate is, culminating with billionaires paying no income tax at all, so the GOP has essentially achieved their goal as it applies to their sponsors. The question is why do people making $50,000 a year still vote for this bullshit.

You would think that the plumber working in Alabama, crawling around under houses, unclogging toilets, or installing plumbing in new unfinished houses in the winter or summer might resent a Manhattan real estate tycoon who only gets his hands dirty crawling out of a sand trap on the golf course paying no income tax, or just as bad, $750 on hundreds of millions of dollars in income. Instead they applaud his business smarts. Which is actually tax evasion and makes the plumber's life harder.

As a space geek, I’m thrilled we don’t have to be for a seat on the Russian Soyuz to get our astronauts to the ISS. I’m even more thrilled that, after a fifty year hiatus, NASA, through partnerships with SpaceX and Blue Origin, may finally be serious about venturing beyond LEO.

And yes, I enjoy the convenience of shopping on Amazon.

That said, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are still assholes.

You have to admit, the GOP picked a good target this time. Who doesn’t hate the IRS? It’s not the Post Office, that many elderly and rural people depend on. Or the “woke” military that conservatives reflexively love. Everyone hates filing their tax returns to give the IRS their pound of flesh and dreads the day the taxman knocks on their door to putting their finances under a microscope.

It will definitely distract enough of the rubes away from the fact that the GOP is once again protecting Scrooge McDuck’s right to swim in a giant vault full of money.

"if you've ever bought anything on Amazon, and I bet you have, that makes you an enabler" Well I wouldn't have, if all the bookstores in my area hadn't gone under.

But that Alabama plumber loves his guns and his Bible and the GOP told him the evil demonrats will take both away from him while forcing him to gay marry an illegal immigrant Muslim. Besides, he heard some latte sipping liberal hippy say something condescending once, so you can see he has no choice but to vote Republican.

Lessee...the GQP doesn't want to collect taxes from the 1% or the god-botherers. And they don't want to adequately fund our ~OUR~ government agency to operate this country. “Joe Manchin owns millions of dollars in coal stock, founded an energy firm and Exxon lobbyists brag about their access to him. Republicans fundraise on his behalf.”(The Guardian 7/20/2021) And having financial conflicts of interest in congress is meaningless (see Wilbur Ross). But they (Dems as well as Repubs) are damn sure going to collect taxes and enforce the laws on the rest of us. It's very hard to not be chronically discouraged and pessimistic about our future here in the good ole US of A..

I dearly hope the Ds do know exactly whom they're dealing with, how the Rs are willing to do anything to kill Biden's presidency while attempting to retain and gain power, and have a plan to beat the Rs at this game. I also hope they have talented people to depend on to help them with the messaging and the maneuvering in Congress.
