Please recall that Senator Marco Rubio demanded, and received an IG audit of Pete Buttieg’s occasional use of government planes costing the taxpayers . . . [drum roll] . . $42,000. https://www.politico.com/news/2023/02/27/buttigieg-federal-audit-government-planes-00084594

Is there a reason the Dems aren't including the rural hospital closing Medicare and Medicaid cuts the GOP passed in the Big Budget Busting bill when explaining the rationale behind the shut-down? It seems like focusing on "Obamacare subsidies" cedes two reviled words* to the manipulation of GOP pols.

*To republican voters.

Uh, there have been articles about that, look at Robyn's recent articles for examples.

Yes, it’s been addressed here on the Substack of Record, I mean Hakeem, Schumer et al. They’ve also talked about cuts to Medicare/cade but not in the context of the shutdown, unless I’ve missed something.

I saw some comments downthread referring to Noem as Lucifer or some other evil being but they missed the most obvious one: Kali, the Hindu goddess of death and destruction:

Kristi’s got two new jets while you’re still on hold with Blue Cross.

One for her staff, one for her ego—both fueled by taxpayer tears.

If irony had wings, she wouldn’t need the planes.

"Really, buying $172 million worth of private jets for me at a time when [...] the federal government is shut down"

I realize that the Fulvous Fuckwad and his stooges don't give a shit about laws, rules, or regulations if they put a crimp on the gubmint's actions or wonts. We've already watched the Corrupt Coral Coward abuse the Antideficiency Act by robbing Peter to pay the troops (paying the troops is a good thing, even if I object to how the funds were obtained). OTOH, DHS' purchase of two Gulfstream G-700s should be considered above and beyond the pale.

> "Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended a contract to spend more than $170 million on new jets for the U.S. Coast Guard, including one that will be used for the secretary’s travel.

[...]

“These aircraft are Coast Guard aircraft to replace 25-year-old airplanes that are necessary for the mission of the Coast Guard. Congress appropriated the dollars and paid for them in the ‘big, beautiful bill,’ [sic] and we’re grateful that we’re able to move forward[.]”

[...]

“It has come to our [House Appropriations Committee ranking member Rosa DeLauro and Rep. Lauren Underwood] attention that, in the midst of a government shutdown, the United States Coast Guard (USCG) entered into a sole source contract with Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation to procure two new G700 luxury jets to support travel for you and the Deputy Secretary

[...]

The jet order greatly surpassed the initial request made by DHS, which asked for $50 million for a new plane." https://thehill.com/policy/national-security/5563747-kristi-noem-gulfstream-jets-dhs/

(for reference: "Under the Antideficiency Act, agencies can neither spend, nor make commitments to spend, money without appropriations from Congress." https://www.cbpp.org/research/federal-budget/understanding-the-legal-framework-governing-a-shutdown The problem is that even if the funds were appropriated prior to the shutdown the request was for $50 mil, not almost 3½ times that amount.)
