I think you pegged it with the monetization angle; he thinks he sees a bandwagon, and thinks himself shrewd for trying to catch the wave early on in the nascent Trump era. Doesn't look from here like there's anything at all beyond that play in "this asshole's game", as you so succinctly (and aptly) put it.
It's actually a brilliant analogy. If you ended up despising the characters Edith and Archie bunker then YOU are the seriously messed up one.
Yes, so many of the views of people on the right are bigoted, deplorable, WRONG and STUPID!! But you can't hate these people. You just can't. Carrying around hate like that is profoundly immoral, and toxic to our own selves.
Also, we can't hate them because so many of them are our parents, aunts, uncles, siblings, respected colleagues, friends-- we're literally talking about almost half the freaking country! Nearly all the ones we directly know are inherently good people, despite their tragically flawed views.
My mom and dad are in their late 70's. Whenever I drop by the old Oklahoma ranch house I grew up in to pay them a visit, I see that damn 60" TV tuned to Fox news 24/7 (Their sleep habits are odd and often don't overlap.) That's all they use it for, other than cartoons for when I bring my little girl for an overnight visit, or the occasional "Big Game" for dad.
Maybe DirecTV should offer a Senior Citizen package with FOX News, ESPN, and 2 or 3 cartoon channels. Millions would gladly buy it, even if they charged TWICE as much as the packages containing 300+ channels... But I digress.
When I see how they pollute their minds, along with the occasional emailed "funny" picture of Obama dressed as an African which doctor, or that time when Mom muttered half to herself how women should not hold high elected office...

Yeah, in the past they were always kind of conservative-- sort of along the lines of Nixon (which arguably put them to the left of many running the DNC today.) In the past they would have never dreamed of supporting the likes of Trump.
In the end, I have little idea how we can be effective in peeling our loved ones away from the right wing media hate machine. All I know for certain is returning hate with hate isn't gonna work.
