Ironic that on July 19, 1848... as those women in Seneca Falls were listing among their grievances "coverture" (which limited a woman's control of her own assets, and gave the husband control of any joint assets) was that it was that, as of February of that year large parts of the United States had "joint property" laws... those parts of the US annexed in February under the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo,. Until the Anglos got around to revising the legal code, to the more retro "coveture" of Anglo-American law, marriages were "joint property" affairs... as in French and Spanish civil codes.
I can throw a biscuit and hit Seneca Falls, it is so close that when my youngest was 7 or 8 he wanted to sail his Opti up the canal with his friends and take it over to make Romulus a City State. He firmly believed they would never expect an attack from "sea".
Grew up in Geneva. My mother was active in local politics, and was at the opening ceremonies for the museum. The federal magistrate for that teeny-tiny federal court in Romulus lived down the street from me, Geneva being, I guess, the nearest point of "civilization".
Given how males of the current Kakistocracy government are, now and again, quoted as being against women having agency or having jobs outside the home, perhaps they're beavering away at removing not just women's rights to their own bodies and self-determination, but to their right to vote. Well, I don't expect most men to give so much of a hoot as to bestir themselves to do something to resist this evil, so I guess 105 years of "voting rights" is more than twice as as long as being able to get a safe, legal abortion, and that ain't bad. /s I HATE EVERYTHING AGAIN
Well I didn't know that Elizabeth Cady Stanton was "racist as fuck." As a former student at Elizabeth Cady Stanton Elementary School in Seneca Falls, NY, that makes me sad. Maybe we made up for it in high school by drinking illegally down at the locks on the canal near her old house?
If we had to rename schools, whose namesakes were racists, there would be no end of it.
Washington and Jefferson alone account for about a bazillion school names nationwide. Lump in state and local politicians who also managed KKK chapters in their cities and the number goes up. And do not forget the various military bases whose namesakes made their reputations and earned medals by genocide of Indigenous Nations.
The simple truth is this country was founded in racism, has wallowed in racism and still encourages racism in thought, word and deed. The whole thing about MAGA is 'making racism great again'.
Many ancient autocrats, whether an Egyptian pharaoh or a Babylonian king or a Chinese lord or even a North American Mississippian Culture tribal ruler felt like they could and should "take it all with me when I die". Their burial tombs and chambers often contain extra skeletons of slaves, servants, family members and choice goods from their harems. The unlucky chosen people who would accompany the boss into the afterlife were usually murdered while the boss was gasping out his last wishes as to who else should join the boss on the journey.
My guess is when donnie dies he will be taking a few of his people with him as well. Not by crudely strangling them and tossing them onto his funeral pyre. He will just have all his blackmail dirt, dossiers and files published and destroy their lives, families and fortunes.
“I'm sure the DOJ and (Attorney General) Pam Bondi have gone through all the things they can release that don't implicate Donald Trump,” she continued."
I always thought the women's vote would doom Trump, especially after he came out as a sexual predator on the Access Hollywood tape. Turning a blind eye seems to be standard with that guy.
I keep thinking back to a point Andrea Dworkin* made in "Right Wing Women":
Women on the Right and women on the Left both look at the world and see a dangerous place for women. Women on the Left seek to empower ourselves in the face of that danger, and work to end that danger; women on the Right seek men who they think will protect them, as individuals, from that danger and do not fight to end it.
I've noticed right wing women in Washington need a male mentor in order to move up in the pecking order. Empty Gee hitched her wagon to Kevin McCarthy's rising star, and Lauren Boebert hitched hers to Matt Gaetz.
Both women enjoyed success within the party by those moves. Both women suffered loss of status when their male stars plummeted.
turning a blind eye - and, this weird all-pervading, constant fatalism that you can't hold DT up to the same standards that apply to everyone else - oh, it's just donald being donald, you can't change him ha ha ha - so lovable - sure, it's a crime and unconstitutional - but he's DONALD! gotta love him!
I, along with many of my fellow New Yorkers, have loathed and detested That Thing since he had his demolition minions destroy the Bonwit Teller goddesses he promised to the Metropolitan Museum. There's a book called Art and Crime that details what happened; I have it reserved at NYPL.
The Women's Rights Museum in Seneca Falls is a good place to visit. When I was there, back in 2010, they had not quite finished it. I'm really sorry I was never able to get back - but I do have pictures, memories, and a Cat's Meow (wooden pictures of places with a black cat on them) of the statues of all the women. If you have a chance, please go. It's a nice little town, and a good museum stop for those who like history and museums.
Ta, Robyn. There are WAY too many people on this earth (mostly men, but there are far too many women who enable them) trying to undo all the progress we have made in civil rights. They want people of color imprisoned so they can be legally enslaved, they want women barefoot and pregnant (and who cares if they die?), LGBTNBQI+ people legislated out of existence, disabled people othered, impoverished, and left to die, and all our assistance to those who need it most erased. We cannot, must not, and shall not let them get away with it. Remember: women's rights are human rights. POC are every bit as deserving of full rights as white people. LGBTNBQI+ people are fully human, have always been with us, and will always be with us no matter what is legislated. What separates us is infinitesimal compared to what we share in common.
Here at the pied-à-nuage, I just made a vegan omelette that beloved husband Meccalopolis is serving, along with lovely, strong coffee. We had our fruit bowls and flowery green tea a while ago, and after we eat, we're headed out to Grey Fox bluegrass festival, where we'll see our lovely tailor (a/k/a Eclipse Friend) and experience something new. Good day, beloved Wonketteers. I love and appreciate you all and I bless us all with love, health, peace, and grace.
Please, please stay safe. Wear a mask or two, wash your hands, sanitize when you cannot wash and let the sanitizer dry completely, stop touching your face, take Vitamin D, get a booster shot six months after your last, and catch up on any other vaccinations you need, avoid indoor and crowded outdoor gatherings and when you must meet, remove masks only to eat, drink, and take quick photos, and stay the fuck away from me and everyone with whom you do not share a roof. Do this because you love yourself, and because I love you, too. Do this in memory of dear departed family and friends like Forever 27 Treg and heroic Tony, Holly's pilot friend, among nearly eight million dead worldwide. Do this to honor the nurses and other frontline medical personnel (we love and appreciate you, Medicos of Wonkette, student, active, and retired), particularly ICU Hera Mrs Land Shark RN. Be kind, especially to yourself, and please stay safe.
Its almost like they want this to be past and forgotten before the midterm elections, because with American goldfish memory, it will be considered ancient history by then
Doubtful. I like to point out that whereas those 200+ Venezuelans sent to the Salvadorian concentration camp never even received a court hearing, the 10 gringos exchanged had all been convicted of crimes in a court of law, after a public trial and with adequate legal counsel.
Anti-slavery doesn't equal anti-racist. : (

Rep. DeLauro is the Lucidamentes’ Congresscritter! She’s even cooler in person.

My elementary school was named after Saul of Tarsus. I don't know if he was racist, but he was definitely a misogynist of the highest order.
Well, he got the St. Stephen stoned... maybe making him the patron of drug dealers?

Can I just say that I, a confirmed lezbo, think Frederick Douglas is one hot dude! Oh my!

I've always like this photo, such a cute twinkle on his and (I think) his daughter's faces

I hear he’s being recognized more and more for doing great things.
Are we tired of winning yet?

I’m sure everything that doesn’t implicate him has already been released.
As someone said earlier, they will be released in two batches: A-S, and U-Z.

Rumor has it that some more shoes are going to drop on Monday in regards to the Epstein files and WSJ.
Thank you for your attention to this matter!

I would care more if I believed turnip would ever pay a price for his myriad of crimes but I don't.
I'm reasonably sure everyone has a psychological breaking point. I want to see his happen in full view of the public.
I can not say this enough, I am on team aneurism, on national TV.
Team Aneurysm!
I'm open to any and all options.
Shoes with high lifts and generous ankle room?
