Twenty-nine years ago, Pat Buchanan gave his famous cultural war speech at the RNC, which Molly Ivins famously described as “sounding better in the original German.” At the time, even many republicans were nervous his, “freedom can only exist if white people are in charge,” doctrine.

Today, it’s their party’s central dogma.

I think Democrats in Congress should put this to the test. Just re-introduce the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as a bill, only without the title, and see how many Republicans vote for it today, as many of their predecessors did in 1964. It would be risky, but illuminating.
