Time will tell. I remain optimistic that more indictments are coming in that case, but I'm enough of a realist to be aware that none have yet, and that this country has a poor record of holding such people accountable for their crimes.

There was an article on my local paper about how the hospitality industry can't get workers. They interviewed a guy that owns a local hotel. He was whining that he can't get reliable workers because the government is paying people to stay home. He is paying $11 an hour. Cleaning hotel rooms isn't dodging axes, but it's close.

It's possible that food service workers are exempt from minimum wage laws. That's the case with the federal minimum. That's why they are able to be paid starvation wages, and make up the rest in tips.

It would be good If Jen would refer to it as the "Build Back Better Plan" or the "American Jobs and Families Plan" instead of the "reconciliation bill" to better present what Democrats want to do here.

Talked to a chef that was laid off during Covid this weekend.

(She was chef at a very chi-chi place that I have never been to, and Mr. Demme has been to only when it was on an expense account.)She said that a lot of hospitality workers have realized how exploited they have been by the industry. (Many start very young.)

She is retraining and going to school to study HR, and do what she can do for the workers.

Long hours and paltry pay have been keeping them down for too long, and now they've had time to breathe and say "no more!"Prestige and "exposure bucks" are not enough!

Expect prices to rise.
