I lived in DE with my German wife under NATO/US SOFA status for years, but finally pulled the plug a couple years ago and got my aufenthaltsgenehmigung. It was surprisingly easy given all the other immigrants trying to get one. I imagine it would be much more difficult to get my wife a green card. And each of us have retirement benefits from our respective countries of birth that we don't want to give up.
Where's home in Germany? We live in the Pfalz, not far from Saarland and the French border.
