If it is totally hopeless, like in WVa, then running a hard core progressive who might be able to get attention and exicte people is arguably good.

But for a tight race in a close district this is effectively rat-fucking.

I get accused of being full of myself, but isn't it remarkable how the things I'm most "full of myself" about are the ones where I can provide receipts. So maybe it's more about degree of confidence after fact-checking and ruling out stances that are just plain nuts.
