This officer, in that split second, realised that the doors were a) unguarded b) probably unlocked and c) led directly into the Senate chambers. In that moment he decided that his life was worth giving in service to those Senators and staff; I don’t think that he had any expectation of not being at least seriously injured if not killed.
Just throw all the awards for valor and service to country and whatever else at this officer. All the things.
