"We all know the difference between the items in 1 and 2."

Do we tho? Do we really? Because I can just about guarantee that a book which was very popular when I was in highschool (and curiosly no longer gets brought up much), Our Bodies Our Selves, would qualify as a 1 for Aunt Danielle while I'd rate it firmly a 2. And think a lot more adolescents should probably read it, if it's even still in print.

About half the sci-fi and fantasy section would need to be pulled. Middle school me discovered some of the more fun and spicy stuff from Piers Anthony and Anne McCaffrey roundabouts that age. The way librarians view it, there is no reading that is bad reading, so no one ever stopped me from checking out Dragonriders of Pern.

So long as librarians explain to everyone that the 50 Shades books are not a guide to healthy BDSM. As well as being shit.

No fixes are perfect, but here's an idea...Every semester every kid has to apply for a 'library pass' that must be signed by a parent. If you don't get a pass, you can't use the library period. It would suck to be the child of one of the Christ-Humping Fascist pedo-loving conservative parents who would deny access to a library for their kid, but there are all the OTHER kids whose parents recognize and respect the right for THEIR kids to have that access...ALL WE ASK of our Nazi Christofascist feces-guzzling neighbors and community members is that they STAY IN THEIR OWN FUCKING LANE. Step into OUR lane and we will annihilate you...got it?

Go ahead...FAFO. If decency ever becomes ascendent in our nation again, there is going to be a RECKONING. So write out your wills NOW and say your motherfucking prayers. Because we WILL end you. Metaphorically...

Feels that way but as the day has gone on I believe it is allergies that are getting to me. It's ragweed time and we just had some rain after a period of drought so I'm sure it's that. It's really the only thing that gets to me. I feel OK now, not great but not bad.

In "The Fragrant Flower Blooms with Dignity", I have to wonder what sales genius convinced someone to build their all-girls' school for daughters of the elite 20' away from the *worst* all-boys' school in the same town.

Expand full comment
JCfromNC's avatar

My brain keeps coming up with rationales for it, like "they were built at the same time, and the management at the girls' school kept steadily improving their student body while management at the boys' school kept letting their reputation slide" but if there is any sort of backstory like that, I've not seen any hints of it.

Ok, I dunno...I had to look up your show. Looks cool, tho. Are you the one who was talking about Apothecary Diaries?

Probably, I love that show/book series.

Yeah, Flower is a sort of Romeo & Juliette story about a boy from what you might call the wrong side of the tracks who catches the eye of a girl from the aforementioned school for daughters of the elite. Except she's there on scholarship, so there's less of a class difference between him and her. I've read the first two volumes of the manga and it's not bad.

Well, bookmark it because it's worth watching. :-) Or you can order the ebooks from Bookwalker.jp

And if you like that one, you might also want to look at "Ascension of a Bookworm", an isekai story about a book-loving girl who gets reincarnated in a pre-printing press society and single-handedly kickstarts the printing industry just so she can have books to read.

The V̶a̶c̶a̶t̶i̶o̶n̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶P̶r̶i̶c̶k̶ Vice President, moving people, the world over...

𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁' 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗝𝗗 𝗩𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗼𝘂𝘁

"It was quite a small action but it had a really big ripple effect."

Dolly Mavies found herself at the centre of worldwide media attention when she pulled out of a gig after a tip-off US Vice-President JD Vance could be attending.

The folk-rock singer-songwriter and her band chose to leave the venue in Daylesford, near Kingham, and she says she was inundated with supportive messages and received a big boost in social media followers after news of their decision spread across the globe.

Someone familiar with the vice-president's plans has told the BBC he did not attend the gig, and had never planned to, though it has been widely reported that he was at the venue that day.

The north Oxfordshire musician, whose real name is Molly Davies, says she and her band were "suspicious" when they turned up at the venue, situated in a farm shop and there was a "lot of security around, which there isn't normally, and then a huge convoy of police motorbikes and very big cars".

I know that he's not, but it's so very weird that he has always considered himself a great deal maker and great businessman when he just constantly fucks over anyone who he deals with. It's like the James Bond thing. In the earlier films, he's presented as a great seducer and by implication a great lover- but no women seem to go back to him for a second go. Trump seems to think fucking people over is the same as fucking them- there's no reason to make them eager to return, you're in it for yourself every single time. There's always more contractors, there's always more vulnerable young girls.
