What in the world is the Texas "Lege?" Can't these people spell anything correctly?

The other, obvious, point is this "shrine of Texas liberty" was the site of a battle (OK, a siege) that Texas lost. Not to mention one of the main issues was Mexico making slavery illegal - a move all the American colonists in Texas didn't exactly support.
