Navy officials argued that eliminating LCS, now priced at more than $500 million each, was necessary to pay for other needs ranging from missiles to new frigates, budgeted around $1.1 billion each.

“It’s not that the LCS … had no military value. It’s that they have less military value and, based on the resources that we have, we had some hard decisions to make,” Vice Adm. Scott Conn, the deputy CNO for warfighting requirements and capabilities, told a House subcommittee on sea power last week.

~ They have military value. But the Navy wants to replace them with vessels that have more value - and cost twice as much.

The problems at the plant go back to 2019. In the January inspection, the FDA found serious health safety problems and 5 strains of cronobacter. They found cronobacter in one of the opened containers of infants killed. It was a different strain, but there's no way to know if that strain was present earlier.

A whistleblower from last October claimed that Abbott falsified records, hid information from investigators, and had a lax cleaning environment.

There was good reason to shut down the plant.

This monopoly-created disaster should never have happened. repub and Democratic administrations let this go unaddressed. Democrats -- make this the poster child for why monopolies should not be allowed. Also too nestle being anywhere near baby formula makes me want to frow up.

You know that at least part of the reason for that is because assholes are undoubtedly responding to this by running around and snapping up all the formula they can find, then selling it at 200% (or more) markup on Craigslist or Ebay. If no one's doing that, it'll be the first time I've ever seen a scarce commodity that didn't result in someone trying to gouge prices.

Babies need carbs for energy.

The problem is not everyone can produce enough for their baby. Neither my aunt (in the 1940s) nor her daughter (in the 1970s) could produce enough for their infants so they had to supplement.

My brother couldn't digest something and my folks had to force formula on him even though it made him sick and then after he was on solid foods the industry figured out how to make formula without whatever it was he couldn't digest. So weird concoctions for the win.
