It reminds me of the late Ivana Trump, who once told in graphic detail how Trump came home from a hair plug appointment she had recommended and was angry with her. She said he raped her. But later, when his power was even greater and she either feared him or needed his money (or both), she recanted. I’m not shaming her in any way. I can understand the vulnerability she must have felt even years later being attacked, doubted and threatened for having revealed a horrific truth about a powerful man. There was tremendous pressure to undo that truth, to destroy it and reverse the damage that kind of truth could do. What did Ivana stand to gain by defending that truth? Was she surrounded by public and private support, victims rights advocates and a sympathetic media? Doubtful. She was probably alone mostly with that pain, and nothing she did would undo that memory of being raped by her enraged husband. So, she retreated. She protected herself by granting her attacker and his mob the alternate reality they demanded. It wasn’t true, she said.
There is something so disheartening and sad about people courageously speaking truth but later feeling they have no choice but to surrender that truth. The worst people celebrate that kind of surrender. It’s a win for darkness over light. When cynicism and lies prevail. Like a movie villain smiling a rictus grin when victims apologize to abusive monsters.
MAGA wants desperately to normalize this behavior. A sexually aggressive man who drinks and cheats and perhaps assaults women is an “alpha” male. He’s a man’s man. One who also drapes himself in a flag with christofascist rhetoric is even better. He will punish enemies of MAGA. So you are obviously correct, they voted for these kinds of people, and they enjoy how we libs who think we are better than them are upset by it. But, we still must expose it. We still have to hold the mirror up to the GOP and show them the faces of abusive, morally bankrupt and unqualified people they seek to empower. It still matters. It’s still what’s right.
