I have spent the last 3 workdays with multiple GS15s and SES planning for shutdown. Me alone it's ~$1.5k. That doesn't count the time I've spent with my team tamping down anxiety. Or future costs of not rolling out next phase of loss mitigation for Veterans. It's typical Congress, headlines and acting opportunities. Fuck those fucking fucks.
I think we’re all agreed that the federal government is shutting down on Sunday. My question is how long it is shut, how many Democrats will Kev Kev have to get onside, and how quickly will his party move to vacate his seat? I hope against hope that Rep. Jeffries stands his ground.
The fact of the matter is that all of these cuts they want amount to a drop in the bucket. Characterizing them as purely mean-spirited is the most accurate way to speak about them since they accomplish nothing in the way of what their pretend fiscal conservatism claims it does.
Six. It would take exactly six Repo congress-critters to be sane and responsible to keep the country out of financial crisis. 3% of the congressional Repos.
Yeah, I know. And it would probably be a political death sentence for a Repo to show any signs of reason or compassion. But still. Six. We need six decent humans. And we don't have them.
Your reminder that what they're quibbling over is a fraction of a fraction of the entire budget. And a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the fucking defense budget.
Always nice to see The West Wing. I emailed Beth Van Duyne, the useless rep from my area. I quoted the Washington Post bit and characterized her unkindly. I also asked who will get the speakership when Kevvie gets the boot.
Meals on Wheels, as of 2021, was feeding approximately 2.5 million people aged 60+ in this country. There are various stats and reports, if one wants to do a bit of digging. I have a brother-in-law who got cancer and then parkinson's and had to give up driving food deliveries for MOW. My mom helped to distribute the food to many seniors. I know plenty of people in my small town of origin who depend on food pantries, church food banks, SNAP, etc. to feed children and grandchildren. In my current little town in New England, the hidden hunger is everywhere, even in wealthier towns that restrict "customers" to belonging to the town or no further than the next town over. Everyone avoids eye contact as they come in and get produce, eggs, milk, bread, boxed things, canned things. And now many of these places offer soaps, shampoos, diapers, baby foods, adult diapers, period products, and other personal care stuff.
You want to see something scary, sad, and enraging? Watch the banana republicans shut down the Federal government. Then watch while Tv news and other "journalist" sources record the many miles long line of cars, going to places with large parking lots and good access roads, such as the Pittsburgh International Airport, in order to find food. Many of those people in the cars have elderly parents and kids or grandkids or foster kids, and almost all of them are employed, full time or part time or many times, but the shutdown prevents them from working.
In the richest country in the world? Oh yeah. I understand why many don't want to know, don't listen, don't watch, won't donate. They know how close they could be to being in the exact same circumstances because of job loss, disease, accidents, debt, death of the "breadwinner."
THIS IS EVIL/INSANE/UNCONSCIONABLE. It's a huge problem that's part of a sprawling horror. That those selfish, venal fucks in Congress think it's no big deal? It's a sick joke being played on the rest of us by unindicted criminals and conspirators. As Jeff Tiedrich would say, "Because fuck you is why."
"Rep. Garret Graves from Louisiana told reporters that House leadership plans to gut spending on so-called “discretionary” programs,"
So right now here in Southeast Louisiana, we're expecting the saltwater from the Gulf to move upriver due to low water volume in the Mississippi. Since most parishes here get their water from the river, this means that our water supply is in peril. The Army Corps of Engineers is working on a solution, but it's not clear whether a government shut-down will affect those efforts. Here in New Orleans, we're expecting the salt to arrive around 10/22 - this will play havoc with tourism, as restaurants and bars won't have a reliable supply of FRESH WATER; it will also play havoc with our lives and the infrastructure of our homes. And this M8therf8cker is among the loons who want to shut down the government.
The real problem here is low-flow toilets. If all the toilets from Pittsburgh all the way down to NO were replaced with good old American 10 gallon-per-flush toilets, then you'd have all the water flow you need...... /s
Maybe if we call children "born fetuses" Republicans would want to help them. Show them pictures of late-term fetuses and say, "Don't you want to help and feed them?" Seriously, their ability to cut off compassion for fetuses once they're born boggles the mind.
I recall in the very recent past when the Supremes overturned Roe how the anti abortion crowd tried to cut the criticism of their repeated failure to address child poverty and maternal and child health by admitting they concentrated on banning abortion and not post birth care. Then promised to change that. Their change appears to be making it even worse for children and their mothers.
The key words are "Then promised to..."Rethugs like to promise things and then hope people forget about them, because they have no plans to keep their promises. Just think of Trump's "great" infrastructure plan, or whatever Abbott was going to do about gun violence after Uvalde.
Ta, Stephen. If I said what I feel, I'd earn the Banhammer of Loving Correction. Thus, I'll shut up.

"The category excludes Social Security..."
Belt it out one more time for the cheap seats. Social Security is not part of the federal budget!!
They're not "crazy" they're evil.
Porque no los dos..

Do the Dems in Congress have an alternative budget ??? Or are they just standing back waiting to see what the Rethugs put up?
The Senate has already passed their alternative, which Kevin promises not to bring to a House vote, because it would pass.

Diogenes wept.
This is why Qievin won't bring Senate bill to floor
Hmm, gonna have to watch 13.

So they can all fuck right off.
exactly, their "fiscal conservatism" is as fake as their patriotism.

McCarthy: Let them drink Perrier.
Fuck em, mint the coin.
That was for the debt ceiling. It won't do anything here.
1) yay West Wing idealism reference!
2) "So, McCarthy will perhaps keep his job by failing to do it." Pretty much the whole package, right there.
"We’re not talking about cutting back on cocaine and hookers."
