Why do so many voters in the states with the most beautiful public lands keep electing congressmen and senators who are so utterly contemptuous of the concept of public lands?

Maybe we, the non-morans, should all go out and occupy some parks and wildlife refuges. It's not like anyone gets jail time for it.

Corruption and greed hurts everyone except those benefiting from it. It's theirs, indeed. They can do with it what they see fit...which may mean mining, timber cutting, and drilling for oil.
