This dude may be an old white man, but I think accusing him of racism/sexism for his "noisemaker" comment is a bit much. He put together a very consistent and inoffensive thought there - 'Some people don't think I'm noisy enough while I'm doing. She'll make noise, but I'll do.' He could have said that same thing about any opponent and it would have been the same dull, generic political attack.

And if Whitmire had been running against someone like TFG or Ted Cruz, his statement would still be accurate, and in no way perceived as racist or sexist.

I’m actually disappointed by SER’s low-key bashing of Whitmire here, without acknowledging Rep. Lee’s flaws as a candidate - especially the audio recording of her absolutely berating and cursing out her own campaign staff, which was released shortly before the election.

I’m also not especially pleased with all the bashing of Houston voters going on in the comments. Maaaaybe they voted for the long-time Democrat who they thought would be a better leader for a city of over 2 million people, instead of someone who abuses their own employees?

2 of our most recent mayors are Black (including the term-limited outgoing mayor), and one was the first openly lesbian mayor of a major city. I honestly don’t think bigotry played a major role here in Whitmire’s election.

Totally not the point, but this reminded me that when I was growing up, "Brand X" was the inferior product in every advertisement. "Our product leaves your dishes sparkling, unlike Brand X!" So I guess it makes sense that the site formerly known as Twitter has become a cheap knockoff of itself now.

But Sheila Jackson L. is a terrible terrible gasbag. Really. I mean, not down to earth. Ask her a question and, GOOD LUCK. Her crown hairdo doesn't help.

Cathy Whitmire's brother in law? Man, I thought association with her was deadly now in Houston politics. Shows what I know.

What is the statistic on non-violent crime in Houston? Non-violent crime still upsets people.

We need more tough on crime out here. I need to know who keeps stealing the outdoor cat's kibble at night and replacing it with banana slugs. My money's on the raccoons, who can't tell the difference between a slug and a nickel.

Cops complain constantly that the proliferation of video recording makes it impossible for them to do their jobs, by which they mean abuse civilians with impunity.

The flipside is that lots of video cameras mean lots more recordings of crimes in progress to get played on the news, which LOVES the inherent drama. And that means more emphasis on crime, and more fools thinking they're living in a Batman-like dystopian urban hellscape.

So cheer up, wingnuts. When technology closes one source of lies ("He was resisting,") it opens another ("Crime is out of control").

George Foreman will help them if they ask, I bet. He's from a super poor section-- 8th ward--and he'd be willing to beat up any bad people there.

Well this is the new normal because of vibes. No matter what the statistics say people just believe that crime is up and it needs to be dealt with harshly. No wonder there's people even trying to make shoplifting into a capital offense. Bleak times ahead.

But take heart, crimes that politicians with a large base of frothing Nazis who are itching to use their guns for hunting people probably won't be punished harshly, or get a wave of progressive people into office.

"Whitmire ran on an openly “tough-on-crime” platform"

I, for one, say thank goodness for that. I'm so tired of all the people that run for office that are all "Crime? Crime is awesome, fuck yeah! More crime!"

SER, you live in Portland. You know how effective those non-stop "the city is a crime ridden shithole!" billboards, op-eds, "news"pieces are. How do you think we ended up with the unqualified morally rancid Rene Gonzales over one of the best council members (Hardesty) that we ever had?
