"Secretary of State Marco Rubio delivered a hypernationalistic speech at the Acropolis in Athens Wednesday in which he lauded the supposed superiority of Western civilization while stoking more fears about immigration.

“The heroes of the West are those who choose to remain faithful to their duty precisely when it is most difficult and painful to do so,” Rubio waxed. “We take the West’s conception of these things—heroism, honor, duty—we take these things for granted. We assume that these somehow are universal to all people in all times and in all places. They are not. They are the product of a distinct character, a distinct character which arose here—and shaped the whole story of the civilization that came after it. The civilization that we must fight to defend today with the same passion as our forefathers did.

“Over time, we in the West came to feel ashamed of the very things that made us exceptional. We felt embarrassed that our achievements set us apart from the rest of the world,” Rubio continued. “Our prosperity somehow became a source of guilt. We no longer believed we deserved and had earned our greatness. The word nationalism became a dirty word. And so we tore down our monuments, we condemned our own history, and in too many places we taught our children to be ashamed of the countries they would inherit. In the process we opened our borders, and outsourced our industry, and allowed our militaries to wither and to decay. And with every passing year, we seem to outsource more of our sovereignty.”

Rubio went on to warn against immigration, amplifying the xenophobia that is a central tenet of both the MAGA movement and the larger international far-right."

wow -- Fox Business is now treating Trump's completely made up economic boasts as though they are factual. Note the citation here -- "The White House"

Reminder that the entire US economy is about $32t. If we really had $21t flowing in, you'd notice it

Fox thinks their viewers are really dumb

Hint--19th Century Fox KNOWS that their viewers ARE that fucking brainwashed!

I am 48. I have never NOT known a world where christofascist pieces of shit WEREN'T trying to take the fuck over. When I was a tween, I asked my mom if she would vote for Jesse Jackson and she said she would NEVER vote for a minister*. I sure as fuck would not in the primary but I vote blue no matter who.

*30 years later I had to tell her she was NOT voting for Marianne Williamson.

My BIL remembers watching a teenaged Glen Campbell play guitar on a kids show out of Albuquerque, K Circle B Time. "He was just sitting there, shredding away on guitar." After that, he moved to LA and was part of the Wrecking Crew.

Pauly2coffees's avatar

He was a brilliant guitarist, especially on the 12 string.

Memories of 40+ years ago when I needed to laugh I'd change the channel to see Gene Scott sitting in his chair screaming into the camera that he wasn't going to preach until he got $50,000 in pledges for the night...and he'd have his singers repeat the same song "I WANT TO KNOW THAT JESUS WELCOMES ME THERE" until he got those pledges...

He was fascinating to watch in a Jerry Lewis telethon sort of way.

I'm home from the work cave for 45 minutes, and have seen Nicolle talk about how that $6.6B MD Pentagon contract with that weird Anduril guy has the Trump sons in the background, watched Brendan Ballou (legal eagle) talk about his day in court arguing to get an injunction against Trump selling subscriptions to Twooth Social to get early 'access' to government info (*cough*, market manipulation cough*), and then a later panel LOLing at Troy Jackson in the debate last night deadpanning to Susan Collins that 'ya' can't eat road salt'.

You stupid libs. You keep saying that our glorious leader the proven rapist Trump has no idea what he is doing, but look at the brilliant plan he has laid out to end the Iranian war.

Iran can bomb Los Angeles or San Diego (maybe both if you push hard enough) so all will be "squarsey" and then Iran will accept Dementia Don's surrender.

And you all just try to make is sound like President Obama was so great getting a better result through diplomacy and didn't cause the death of a single "loser" or "sucker" in our military!

swmnguy's avatar

So I guess Iran will have to mail a bomb to a sleeper cell in SoCal, and they'll take an Uber to deliver the weapon? Or have some guys do a reverse Kon-Tiki with a nuke on board?

Guitarist and luthier famous for his clear Lucite guitars Dan Armstrong was born on this day in 1934. The guitars were known to be heavy, but they had great sustain. Here are The Faces performing "Stay With Me" with Ron Wood playing one of Dan's guitars:

And here are The Flamin' Groovies playing "Slow Death" with Cyril Jordan on a Dan Armstrong guitar:

"We guess the only real difference between the proven rapist Trump and the TV evangelists who preceded him is that when those guys had sex or money scandals, they were sometimes shamed out of their jobs."

A very good article, Dok, and I appreciate the point, but the above statement is why I think the better comparison between the proven rapist Trump and the various grifts of the right is talk radio.

Basically Dementia Don has adopted Rush Limbaughs playbook. Talk fast and loud, never admit you were wrong, and yell down anyone who brings up facts.

Add to that a few adds for uncomfortable pillows, god or crypto, and your apocalypse rations and it would be impossible to tell the difference from the average demented rant of Trump and an hour of Sean Hannity.

When truth is not important, what stops you from saying whatever you want? At least the televangelist seemed to have some small amount of morals, like they once actually read the Bible.

It is very interesting to me, though, if you compare what the televangelist were saying in the 1980s about what the antichrist would be like and compare it to the proven rapist Trump, it is almost like they had a point.

I’ve been in a rabbit hole (well, several) lately about the English Civil War and Charles I. So of course I’ve been reading up on Oliver Cromwell and his Puritanical beliefs. You know, the whole Popery hatred, closing the theatres, and general misery of 1650s England.

And I’ve come to a conclusion.

I’d rather live with THAT than the neo-scamvangelist bullshit going on. At least Cromwell at al were sincere in their beliefs and not just blatant grifters and assholes. Say what you will about the man, but Cromwell got shit DONE. Often at the point of a (sometimes metaphorical, sometimes not) sword, but he did.

Phantom…not quite pain, but feeling in my leg today. Like my right foot is permanently twisted at the ankle. That plus depression today kinda sucks. I’m dreaming of the day I get to walk again—after my stump heals, I’m off the wound vac, and I get clearance to start the prosthetic process. I know I’m gonna cry. (Plus my brother has already said that he’s going to be there when I take my first steps unless he’s offshore or out of state.

I think tonight is gonna be hot dogs (with chili) and plenty of retro gaming. I’ve never played Super Mario 3 or Legend of Zelda on a 55-inch monitor before, but theres a first time for everything! And a couple episodes of The Pitt tonight as well…

Hey, Chili Dogs should hit the spot.

I kind of agree about Cromwell, et al. They were evil, but they lived it. His elite cavalry, the Ironsides, would expel a trooper for cursing, blasphemy, using tobacco, or for having extramarital sex.
